Chapter 1 - The Voice Beside My Hospital Bed

“Don’t open your eyes, Mom…”

The whisper was so quiet that nobody else in the hospital room heard it.

But Emily Carter heard every single word.

“Please… stay asleep.”

A tiny hand grabbed hers beneath the white hospital blanket.

“Dad is waiting for you to die.”

For twelve days, Emily had been trapped inside a body that refused to move.

For twelve days, doctors had told her family that she was unconscious.

For twelve days, everyone believed Emily Carter was unaware of what was happening around her.

They were wrong.

She could hear.

She could feel.

She could remember.

And now she knew the man sitting beside her hospital bed every night, holding her hand for the cameras and telling everyone he loved his wife…

Was the same man waiting for her to disappear.

Her husband.

Ryan Carter.

Emily tried to scream.

Nothing came out.

She tried to open her eyes.

Nothing happened.

Her body remained frozen.

But her mind was awake.

And the voice beside her belonged to the one person she loved more than anything in the world.

Her nine-year-old son.

Ethan.

“Mom,” Ethan whispered again, tears shaking in his voice. “I know you can hear me.”

Emily’s heart nearly stopped.

How did he know?

“I saw your finger move yesterday,” Ethan continued. “I know you’re still here.”

A tear slowly rolled from the corner of Emily’s closed eye.

Her son noticed.

He squeezed her hand.

“Don’t cry. If Dad knows you’re awake, he’ll hurt you.”

Those words were worse than any nightmare.

Emily spent her entire life believing Ryan was her protector.

The man who brought her coffee every morning.

The man who kissed her forehead before leaving for work.

The man who promised her on their wedding day:

“Nothing in this world will ever come between us.”

But now…

Her own son was warning her to fear him.

The hospital door suddenly opened.

Ethan immediately stepped away from the bed.

A familiar voice filled the room.

“Talking to your mother again?”

Ryan.

Emily felt every muscle inside her body tighten.

“Yeah,” Ethan answered quickly.

Ryan walked closer.

Emily imagined his face.

The same handsome face everyone trusted.

The same charming smile that fooled their friends.

“Ethan,” Ryan said softly. “You need to accept reality.”

A pause.

“Your mother is gone.”

Emily’s heart broke.

Gone?

She was right there.

Listening to every lie.

“She’s not coming back,” Ryan continued. “And we have to make difficult decisions now.”

Emily heard papers being placed beside her hand.

“The house.”

“The accounts.”

“The company shares.”

Her blood ran cold.

Ryan wasn’t grieving.

He was planning.

“Your mother prepared these documents before the accident,” Ryan told Ethan.

A lie.

Emily knew it was a lie.

She never signed anything.

Never approved anything.

Never gave him permission.

Ethan looked at the papers.

“She didn’t sign them.”

Ryan’s voice changed.

“She would have.”

“No,” Ethan whispered.

The room became silent.

Emily felt proud.

Terrified.

Proud.

Her little boy was standing up to a grown man.

Ryan moved closer.

“Ethan.”

The warning in his voice was clear.

“Where is your phone?”

Silence.

Emily knew something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Then another voice entered the room.

“Ryan, we don’t have time for this.”

Claire.

Emily’s younger sister.

The person who had cried beside Emily’s hospital bed.

The person who told everyone:

“I’ll never leave my sister.”

But now…

She was standing with Ryan.

Emily felt a painful emptiness inside her.

“How long until the notary arrives?” Claire asked.

“Twenty minutes.”

Twenty minutes.

That was all they needed.

Twenty minutes to steal her life.

Twenty minutes to erase her.

Ethan stepped closer to Emily’s bed.

“My mom told me something.”

Ryan turned.

“What?”

“If anything happened to her…”

Ethan slowly reached behind his back.

“…I should call Ms. Parker.”

The room froze.

Ryan’s expression changed instantly.

Emily noticed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Give me the phone,” Ryan ordered.

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“No!”

For the first time, Emily heard anger in Ryan’s voice.

The door suddenly closed.

Then came the sound Emily feared.

Click.

The lock.

Ryan had locked them inside.

Claire walked closer to him.

Her voice dropped.

“The kid knows too much.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

Ryan stared at Ethan.

“He’s just a child.”

Claire shook her head.

“He’s Emily’s child.”

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Claire whispered:

“And children talk.”

Emily focused every bit of strength she had left.

She needed to move.

She needed to warn Ethan.

She needed to prove she was alive.

One finger.

Just one.

Come on.

Move.

Move!

Seconds passed.

Then…

Her finger moved.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Ethan saw it.

His eyes widened.

For one second, Emily knew he understood.

Mom was awake.

But Ethan did something unexpected.

He looked away.

He hid his reaction.

Because he knew the truth.

If Ryan discovered Emily was conscious…

She might not survive another night.

Then suddenly…

Someone grabbed the locked door handle.

Everyone turned.

Ryan’s face changed.

Claire stepped back.

The handle moved again.

A voice came from outside.

“Open the door.”

Ryan didn’t answer.

The door opened anyway.

Standing there was Ms. Parker.

Emily’s attorney.

Behind her was a detective carrying a folder.

The detective looked directly at Ryan.

“Mr. Carter.”

Ryan forced a smile.

“Yes?”

The detective opened the folder.

“We need to talk about your wife’s accident.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

The detective placed photos on the table.

“Because we discovered something interesting.”

A pause.

“Emily Carter’s brake lines were cut intentionally.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

And beneath the blanket…

Emily finally realized the truth.

Her accident was never an accident.

Someone had tried to kill her.

And the person who tried…

May you like

Was standing only three feet away.
