Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER WHO CONTROLLED EVERYTHING

Vivienne Beaumont had spent her entire life mastering one skill.

Control.

She controlled conversations.

She controlled businesses.

She controlled her family.

And most importantly…

she controlled the truth.

But tonight, that control was slipping away.

Marcus watched her carefully.

“You knew.”

Vivienne didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You knew Daniel was alive.”

Still nothing.

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

“Why?”

Vivienne finally looked at her.

And the cold expression returned.

“Because some people are dangerous when they know too much.”

Claire’s face changed.

Marcus immediately stepped forward.

“You admit it?”

Vivienne smiled.

“I admit nothing.”

“You always were emotional, Claire.”

That sentence almost broke Marcus.

Because even now…

even trapped…

even exposed…

Vivienne still tried to make Claire doubt herself.

Marcus looked around.

“She has spent years convincing everyone my daughter was unstable.”

Nobody spoke.

Marcus continued.

“She made people ignore her.”

“She made people question her.”

“She made everyone believe Preston was the victim.”

Claire looked down.

Because every memory returned.

Every insult.

Every accusation.

Every moment she wondered if she was the problem.

Marcus turned toward the guests.

“And all of you helped.”

Nobody looked at him.

Because he was right.

A woman near the window finally spoke.

“I didn’t know.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You saw.”

She looked away.

Another guest whispered.

“We thought it was just a marriage problem.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That is how abuse survives.”

“People call it complicated.”

“When the truth is simple.”

“Someone was hurting her.”

“And everyone stayed quiet.”

The room became heavier.

Claire wiped her face.

“I tried to leave.”

Marcus looked at her.

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Preston’s expression changed.

“You never told anyone that.”

Claire looked at him.

“I knew nobody would help me.”

Marcus felt anger rise again.

“What happened?”

Claire hesitated.

Then she opened another file.

Inside was a document.

A medical report.

Marcus read it.

His hands tightened.

“Who did this?”

Claire looked at Preston.

“He said I fell.”

Marcus looked at Preston.

Preston remained silent.

The silence was enough.

Then the security panel flashed again.

NEW EVIDENCE UPLOADED.

Everyone turned.

A folder appeared.

TITLE:

PROJECT MIRROR.

Marcus opened it.

The first page made his blood run cold.

Because it contained names.

Hundreds of names.

Judges.

Police officers.

Business owners.

People who had benefited from Beaumont money.

People who had helped bury the truth.

Claire whispered.

“They bought everyone.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“No.”

He looked at the list.

“They owned everyone.”

Suddenly, Sheriff Pike stepped backward.

Marcus noticed.

“You’re leaving.”

Pike shook his head.

“No.”

But his body already answered.

He was afraid.

Marcus looked at him.

“What happened six years ago?”

Pike remained silent.

Then finally…

he spoke.

“Daniel found something.”

“What?”

Pike looked at Claire.

“He found out the Beaumonts had been planning this for years.”

Marcus waited.

“And?”

Pike swallowed.

“And he found out who was paying me.”

The room went completely silent.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who?”

Pike looked at Vivienne.

Everyone froze.

Vivienne’s face remained calm.

But her eyes changed.

Marcus understood.

The answer was there.

May you like

The entire time.
