Chapter 11 - THE RECORDING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel placed a small device on the table.
Nobody recognized it.
Except Vivienne.
Her expression changed instantly.
Marcus noticed.
“What is that?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Something she thought disappeared.”
Vivienne’s voice became sharp.
“Daniel.”
For the first time…
she sounded afraid.
Daniel pressed the button.
A recording began.
At first, there was only static.
Then voices.
Clear voices.
Vivienne Beaumont.
Sheriff Raymond Pike.
And Preston.
Six years earlier.
Marcus froze.
Because he heard his own friend’s voice.
Daniel.
The recording played.
Vivienne’s voice filled the room.
“He knows too much.”
Pike answered.
“What do you want me to do?”
A pause.
Then Preston spoke.
“Make sure he disappears.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Marcus stopped moving.
The room became completely silent.
Because there was no explanation left.
No excuse.
No story.
No manipulation.
Just their voices.
The recording continued.
Vivienne said:
“If Daniel Cross talks, everything collapses.”
Pike responded:
“And Marcus?”
Vivienne answered:
“Marcus is easier to control.”
Marcus felt something break inside him.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Betrayal.
They had known.
They had planned.
They had watched him mourn his friend.
And they had lived with it.
For six years.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Preston suddenly moved toward Daniel.
“You planned this.”
Daniel stepped back.
“No.”
“I survived.”
Preston’s face turned red.
“You ruined everything.”
Daniel looked at him.
“No.”
“You ruined everything when you believed nobody would ever stop you.”
Sheriff Pike suddenly reached into his jacket.
Several guests screamed.
Marcus reacted instantly.
But Pike didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out a phone.
He pressed a button.
A message appeared.
Marcus looked.
“What did you do?”
Pike smiled.
For the first time in minutes.
“I sent everything.”
The room froze.
“To who?”
Pike looked at Vivienne.
“To the people who actually control this.”
Vivienne’s expression changed.
“Raymond.”
Pike laughed.
“You really thought I worked for you?”
Everyone stared.
The sheriff continued.
“I worked for the Beaumonts.”
“But I was never loyal.”
Marcus understood.
There were layers.
The Beaumont family was only one piece.
Someone above them existed.
Someone who had been hidden.
Daniel looked worried.
“This is what I warned you about.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“The Beaumonts are not the top.”
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
“Then who is?”
Daniel looked toward the estate.
“The people who built them.”
Before anyone could ask more…
every screen inside the conservatory turned on.
A single message appeared.
NO ONE LEAVES UNTIL THE DEBT IS PAID.
Claire grabbed Marcus’s hand.
“Dad.”
Marcus looked at the screens.
Someone else had taken control.
Someone outside.
Someone powerful enough to override Beaumont security.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“We have a bigger problem.”
Marcus stared at the message.
Because for the first time that night…
he realized something terrifying.
The Beaumont family had not created the monster.
May you like
They were working for it.
