Chapter 4 - THE NAME THEY TRIED TO BURY

The Beaumont conservatory had never felt smaller.
A room designed to display wealth had become a cage holding every secret they had spent years protecting.
Marcus Reed stood beneath the red emergency lights with the folder in his hands.
The words on the document continued burning in his mind.
FINAL SILENCE.
Six years earlier.
The same year Daniel Cross died.
The same year Marcus lost the closest friend he ever had.
The same year the Beaumont Foundation suddenly expanded into a billion-dollar organization.
Too many coincidences.
Too many unanswered questions.
Marcus looked at Sheriff Pike.
“Tell me what happened to Daniel Cross.”
Pike’s face tightened.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Marcus almost smiled.
Because it was the exact answer guilty people always gave.
They didn’t deny the crime.
They denied knowing about it.
Claire looked between them.
“Dad.”
“Who was Daniel?”
Marcus looked at his daughter.
“He was the man who taught me how to survive.”
A pause.
“And the man who died trying to expose people like them.”
Vivienne stepped forward.
“This is becoming ridiculous.”
Marcus turned.
“Is it?”
She lifted her chin.
“You walk into my home.”
“You lock everyone inside.”
“And you accuse respected members of this community based on rumors.”
Marcus stared at her.
“Rumors don’t transfer millions of dollars.”
“Rumors don’t erase evidence.”
“Rumors don’t make sheriffs look afraid.”
The guests started whispering again.
For years, they had admired the Beaumont family.
Now they were seeing something different.
Not power.
Not elegance.
Fear.
Preston suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.”
Marcus watched him carefully.
“You think you won because you pressed a button?”
Preston stepped closer.
“You think those cameras scare us?”
Marcus said nothing.
Preston smiled.
“My family built this county.”
“We own businesses.”
“We control contracts.”
“We have friends everywhere.”
Marcus looked at Claire.
Then back at Preston.
“That’s exactly why you made a mistake.”
Preston frowned.
“Why?”
“Because powerful people always believe nobody can touch them.”
Marcus held up the folder.
“Until someone finally does.”
At that moment, the security panel flashed.
NEW DATA RECEIVED.
Everyone looked toward the screen.
A file appeared.
Encrypted.
Marcus walked closer.
The system requested authorization.
He placed his card against the panel.
The file opened.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Audio recordings.
Claire covered her mouth.
Because the first image showed Preston.
Not at a family event.
Not at a business meeting.
At a private warehouse.
Standing beside Sheriff Pike.
And beside them…
was another man.
A man Marcus recognized immediately.
His heart stopped.
Because the dead man from six years ago was standing in the photograph.
Daniel Cross.
Alive.
Claire looked at her father.
“Dad…”
Marcus couldn’t answer.
Because everything he believed about the past had just collapsed.
Daniel Cross had not died.
Someone had made the world believe he did.
May you like
And the people inside this room knew why.
