Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE LOCKED DOORS

Nobody in the Beaumont conservatory understood what was happening.
Except Marcus Reed.
And the people who suddenly realized they were trapped inside.
The guests began whispering.
“What is Omega-7?”
“Why did the security system respond to him?”
“Who gave him access?”
Vivienne Beaumont looked around the room.
Her perfect expression was gone.
The confidence disappeared.
For years, she had controlled every person in this house.
Employees.
Family members.
Politicians.
Business partners.
But she had never controlled Marcus Reed.
And now she was afraid.
Marcus turned toward the security panel.
“Preserve every camera recording.”
The system responded immediately.
“Recording protection activated.”
Sheriff Pike took a step forward.
“You need to explain yourself.”
Marcus looked at him.
“No.”
Pike frowned.
“This is my jurisdiction.”
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Then you should have done your job.”
The sheriff’s face tightened.
Claire remained beside her father.
Her hand was still holding his jacket.
Like she was afraid he would disappear.
Marcus noticed.
And it broke something inside him.
“How long?”
Claire looked confused.
“What?”
“How long has this been happening?”
She looked away.
Marcus already knew the answer.
He just needed her to say it.
Claire swallowed.
“Dad…”
“Tell me.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Since Christmas.”
The room became silent.
Marcus slowly looked at Preston.
Preston immediately shook his head.
“She’s lying.”
Claire flinched.
Marcus noticed.
That tiny movement.
That tiny reaction.
And suddenly every excuse Preston had given became meaningless.
Marcus turned back to his daughter.
“What happened at Christmas?”
Claire looked around.
At the guests.
At the people who had watched.
Then she whispered.
“I tried to tell someone.”
Her voice became smaller.
“I told your mother-in-law.”
Everyone looked at Vivienne.
Vivienne’s expression remained cold.
“She was unstable.”
Claire continued.
“She told me nobody would believe me.”
Marcus’s hands tightened.
Claire continued.
“Because Preston was a Beaumont.”
The words hit harder than any punch.
Preston stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Stay away from her.”
For the first time, Preston hesitated.
Because Marcus was no longer speaking like a father.
He was speaking like someone who had reached the end of his patience.
Claire opened her purse.
Her fingers trembled.
She removed a folder.
“I found this.”
Marcus took it.
Inside were financial documents.
Bank records.
Foundation reports.
Private transfers.
At first, Marcus didn’t understand.
Then he saw the names.
Beaumont Foundation.
Multiple accounts.
Large payments.
And one repeated recipient.
Raymond Pike.
Sheriff Pike.
The sheriff noticed Marcus looking at him.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Marcus saw it.
“You want to explain this?”
Pike didn’t answer.
Vivienne stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Marcus turned.
“Is it?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You are destroying people’s reputations based on papers my unstable daughter stole.”
Claire looked hurt.
Marcus noticed.
The word unstable.
Again.
They kept using the same word.
Because powerful people didn’t need the truth.
They only needed a story.
And they had been telling the same story about Claire for months.
Marcus looked at the cameras above them.
“Everything said tonight has been recorded.”
Vivienne’s smile disappeared.
Marcus continued.
“Every threat.”
“Every lie.”
“Every person who stood here and watched.”
The room became uncomfortable.
Because everyone realized something.
They weren’t trapped with Marcus.
They were trapped with evidence.
Preston suddenly moved toward Claire.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Preston stopped.
His eyes became cold.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
Marcus looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Preston smiled.
“No.”
“You don’t.”
Then he leaned closer.
“You think this ends tonight?”
Marcus said nothing.
Preston whispered.
“You have no idea what my family owns.”
Marcus looked around.
At the locked doors.
At the cameras.
At the terrified faces.
Then he answered.
“I know exactly what your family owns.”
A pause.
“Fear.”
For the first time…
May you like
Preston Beaumont had nothing to say.
