Chapter 3 - THE FILE THAT COULD DESTROY THE BEAUMONTS

The Black Code lockdown continued for twenty-seven minutes.
Twenty-seven minutes where the most powerful people in the county could not leave.
And every second was being recorded.
Marcus stayed beside Claire.
He refused to move.
Not even when doctors inside the estate offered to examine her.
Claire didn’t trust anyone wearing a Beaumont badge.
Marcus understood why.
“Dad.”
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
Those two words hurt more than anything.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.”
“You don’t apologize.”
Claire looked down.
“I should have told you.”
Marcus stayed quiet.
Then he answered.
“You were afraid.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“Of him?”
Claire looked at Preston.
Then at Vivienne.
Then at Sheriff Pike.
“Of all of them.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
Because that answer was worse.
One person could be defeated.
A system was harder.
A system protected itself.
The security panel suddenly flashed.
Incoming connection.
Everyone looked up.
A voice came through the speakers.
“Marcus Reed.”
Nobody moved.
Because the voice belonged to someone unexpected.
Someone who had been dead for six years.
Claire looked at her father.
“Who is that?”
Marcus didn’t answer.
The voice continued.
“You activated Black Code.”
A pause.
“Which means you found the truth.”
Marcus stepped closer to the panel.
“Identify yourself.”
The voice remained calm.
“You already know.”
Marcus’s face changed.
Because he did.
It was Daniel Cross.
His former colleague.
His closest friend.
A man who had died in an accident.
Or at least…
That was what everyone believed.
The room became silent.
Sheriff Pike looked terrified.
Vivienne stepped backward.
Marcus noticed.
“You know him.”
Vivienne said nothing.
Marcus turned.
“You know him.”
Still silence.
Claire looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Marcus stared at the Beaumont family.
And suddenly he realized.
The attack on Claire was not the beginning.
It was the final mistake.
The Beaumonts had spent years hiding something much bigger.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“Marcus.”
“Yes?”
“Look under the foundation records.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
“The Beaumont Foundation.”
A pause.
“The money is not the secret.”
Everyone listened.
“The secret is what they paid to hide.”
The connection ended.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at the folder again.
The financial documents.
The transfers.
The names.
Then Claire whispered.
“Dad.”
She pointed at one page.
“There’s something else.”
Marcus looked.
A payment.
A date.
A description.
His entire body froze.
Because the payment had been made six years earlier.
The exact month Daniel Cross died.
And the description was only two words.
“Final silence.”
Marcus slowly raised his eyes.
Everyone in the room was watching him.
He looked at Preston.
Then Vivienne.
Then Sheriff Pike.
And he finally understood.
Claire wasn’t just fighting an abusive husband.
She had uncovered a secret that powerful people had killed to protect.
Marcus folded the document.
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“This was never about my daughter.”
A pause.
“This was about what she discovered.”
The red emergency lights continued flashing.
The doors remained locked.
And inside the Beaumont estate…
May you like
the truth was finally awake.
