Chapter 13 - THE SECRET MARCUS NEVER KNEW

For several seconds, Marcus Reed could not move.
The photograph remained on the screen.
His father.
A younger Vivienne Beaumont.
Standing together.
Smiling.
Like old friends.
Like partners.
Like people who had shared something important.
But Marcus knew his father.
At least, he thought he did.
His entire childhood was built around one belief.
His father was a man of principles.
A man who hated corruption.
A man who always told him that powerful people were dangerous when nobody questioned them.
And now…
the past was standing in front of him.
Showing him that maybe the story had never been complete.
Claire looked at him carefully.
“Dad.”
Marcus slowly turned.
“Yes?”
“Do you know what this means?”
He looked back at the screen.
“No.”
And for the first time that night…
Marcus admitted something he hated admitting.
He did not know the truth.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I found that picture six years ago.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I knew there was something connecting your father to the Beaumonts.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t know if your father was protecting them…”
Daniel paused.
“Or investigating them.”
That answer changed everything.
Marcus looked at the picture again.
Because there was another possibility.
A possibility he had refused to consider.
Maybe his father had not been part of the corruption.
Maybe he had been fighting it from the inside.
Daniel opened another folder.
“I found these after I disappeared.”
Marcus looked at the documents.
They were old.
Decades old.
The first page had a handwritten note.
A note written by Marcus’s father.
Marcus touched the paper.
His hands shook.
Because he recognized the handwriting instantly.
He had seen it thousands of times.
The note said:
IF THEY EVER FIND THIS, IT MEANS I FAILED.
Marcus’s heart dropped.
Claire moved closer.
“What did he fail at?”
Marcus continued reading.
The note explained that years earlier, his father discovered a secret organization controlling major businesses through hidden financial networks.
The Circle.
The same group controlling the Beaumonts.
But there was something else.
Something worse.
The Circle did not create criminals.
They created protection.
They found powerful people who could break rules.
Then they made sure those people never faced consequences.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“My father knew.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“And he tried to stop them.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked at Vivienne.
She remained silent.
But for the first time…
she looked old.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just someone who had spent decades hiding.
Marcus walked toward her.
“You knew my father.”
Vivienne said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“You knew he was investigating you.”
Finally, Vivienne answered.
“He was a stubborn man.”
Marcus stared.
“That is not an answer.”
Vivienne smiled slightly.
“He believed morality could defeat power.”
A pause.
“He was wrong.”
Claire stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Claire’s voice was quiet.
“But he wasn’t.”
Vivienne looked at her.
Claire continued.
“He just needed someone to finish what he started.”
Marcus looked at his daughter.
And in that moment…
he realized something.
Claire had spent months being treated like she was weak.
But she had been the one person brave enough to uncover everything.
The security system suddenly activated.
Another message appeared.
THE FINAL FILE HAS BEEN UNLOCKED.
Daniel looked shocked.
“No.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“They found us.”
The file opened.
Inside was one final document.
A list.
Names.
The members of The Circle.
Marcus scanned it.
Then stopped.
Because one name was at the top.
The person who controlled everything.
The person who had been hiding behind the Beaumont family.
The person who had ordered Daniel’s disappearance.
Marcus read the name.
And his face changed completely.
Because it was someone he knew.
May you like
Someone he trusted.
