The Price of Their Silence / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN

The Beaumont estate had never witnessed a moment like this.

For years, every person who entered those gates understood one rule.

The Beaumont family always won.

They controlled the story.

They controlled the evidence.

They controlled the people who were supposed to stop them.

But now, standing outside the locked conservatory doors, was the one person who could destroy everything.

Daniel Cross.

Alive.

After six years of being declared dead.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed.

Preston Beaumont stared at him like he was looking at a ghost.

Because to Preston…

that was exactly what Daniel was.

A ghost that should have stayed buried.

“How?”

The word escaped Preston’s mouth.

Daniel looked at him calmly.

“You spent six years asking the wrong question.”

Preston’s face tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You should have asked why I disappeared.”

Marcus watched every expression.

Every movement.

Every hesitation.

Because he knew Daniel.

And Daniel was not here for revenge.

He was here because he had finally decided to end something.

Claire stood beside her father.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked at Daniel.

“I thought you were dead.”

Daniel looked at her.

“I know.”

“Everyone did.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“Why didn’t you come back?”

Daniel looked away.

Because the answer was painful.

“Because every time I tried…”

He paused.

“They knew.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward Vivienne.

The answer was obvious.

Vivienne remained silent.

But silence was no longer protecting her.

Daniel continued.

“They watched me.”

“They followed me.”

“They made sure I understood one thing.”

A pause.

“If I returned, someone else would suffer.”

Claire looked at her father.

Marcus understood immediately.

They had threatened Daniel with Claire.

The same person they had spent years controlling.

Preston suddenly laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“You expect people to believe this?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

“I expect evidence to make them believe it.”

He opened the folder in his hand.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Recordings.

Proof.

He handed everything to Marcus.

Marcus opened the first page.

His expression changed.

Because it wasn’t just financial corruption.

It was a timeline.

Every step.

Every decision.

Every person involved.

Daniel had documented everything.

Marcus looked at him.

“You collected all of this alone?”

Daniel nodded.

“For six years.”

Claire whispered.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I promised your father I would protect the truth.”

Marcus lowered the folder.

The words hurt.

Because Daniel had kept a promise while Marcus believed he had abandoned him.

Then Sheriff Pike suddenly stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes, I do.”

Pike’s voice became louder.

“You think exposing this changes anything?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No.”

“It changes everything.”

Pike looked around.

The guests were listening.

The cameras were recording.

The entire county could soon know what happened inside the Beaumont estate.

Vivienne finally spoke.

“Daniel.”

Everyone turned.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You were always emotional.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You always did that.”

“What?”

“Pretended people were weak when they were actually dangerous.”

Vivienne smiled.

“You think you’re dangerous?”

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Then Claire.

Then back at Vivienne.

“No.”

“I think the truth is.”

That sentence made the room colder.

Because everyone knew.

The truth was the one thing the Beaumonts could not control.
