Chapter 9 - TWO CHILDREN, ONE SECRET

I spent the next ten minutes refusing to believe him.
Because some truths were too impossible to accept.
Maya was my daughter.
I knew that.
I carried her.
I raised her.
I loved her more than my own life.
Nobody could change that.
But Adrian wasnât saying she wasnât mine.
He was saying someone had hidden something about her.
âWhat exactly are you telling me?â
My voice shook.
âThat Maya was connected to Leoâs birth?â
Adrian nodded slowly.
âYes.â
âNo.â
I stepped back.
âNo, that doesnât make sense.â
âI know.â
âThen why are you saying it?â
âBecause I have proof.â
Those words hurt.
Proof.
Not rumors.
Not guesses.
Proof.
Adrian handed me a file.
Inside were medical documents.
Old records.
Names.
Dates.
I looked through them.
Then I saw it.
A signature.
A doctorâs name.
The same doctor who handled Leoâs delivery.
My hands went cold.
âHow?â
Adrian watched me.
âThe doctor disappeared three years ago.â
âWhy?â
âBecause he knew the truth.â
I looked up.
âWhat truth?â
Adrianâs expression became darker.
âThat my son was never the only target.â
A silence followed.
Then Maya woke up.
âMommy?â
I immediately closed the file.
âIâm here.â
She looked at Adrian.
Then at Leo.
âTheyâre brothers?â
The question shocked both of us.
âWhat?â
Maya pointed at them.
âThey look the same.â
I stared.
Children noticed things adults ignored.
Adrian slowly looked at Leo.
Then at Maya.
For the first timeâŠ
He looked afraid.
Not because of enemies.
Not because of power.
Because maybeâŠ
The impossible was true.
Before anyone could speak, one of Adrianâs men rushed inside.
âBoss.â
Adrian turned.
âWhat?â
âWe found the person who changed the records.â
My heart raced.
âWho?â
The man hesitated.
Then looked at me.
âIt was someone close to you.â
My blood ran cold.
âWho?â
The bodyguard answered:
âYour husband.â
I felt the world tilt.
âNo.â
Adrian watched my reaction.
âHe knew?â
âI donât understand.â
The bodyguard handed Adrian another file.
âHe paid the hospital.â
âFor what?â
Adrian opened it.
His face became expressionless.
Then he gave it to me.
I read the first line.
And my knees almost collapsed.
PATERNITY RECORD ALTERATION REQUEST.
My name.
Mayaâs name.
Markâs signature.
And one sentence written underneath:
THE CHILD MUST NEVER KNOW WHO SHE REALLY IS.
I looked at Adrian.
A thousand questions filled my mind.
Why did Mark change my daughterâs records?
Why was he connected to Leoâs birth?
Why did he want me away from the truth?
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
One picture.
The picture was of Maya.
Taken moments ago.
Sleeping beside me.
The message said:
IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER TO STAY ALIVE, STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.
My blood turned cold.
Adrian saw the message.
And something inside him snapped.
The calm disappeared.
The patience disappeared.
The mafia boss returned.
He looked at his men.
âFind whoever sent this.â
Then he looked at me.
His voice was low.
âFrom this moment onâŠâ
A pause.
âYou and your daughter are under my protection.â
I stared at him.
âYou donât even know me.â
His eyes met mine.
âNo.â
He looked toward Leo.
âBut I know what it feels like to almost lose a child.â
Outside the airport, a car engine started.
Someone was watching us.
Someone who knew our secrets.
May you like
And someone was getting ready for the next move.
