Chapter 11 - THE DOCTOR WHO STOLE THE TRUTH

The doctor looked exactly like I remembered.

Older.

Tired.

But the same eyes.

The same eyes that looked away from me seven years ago when I begged someone to listen.

Dr. Thomas Reed.

The man who helped deliver Leo.

The man who destroyed my career.

The man who knew everything.

He sat across from Adrian inside the estate’s security room.

His hands were tied.

But he wasn’t afraid.

That scared me.

People who weren’t afraid of Adrian Viscari were usually dangerous.

Adrian stood in front of him.

“Tell me everything.”

Dr. Reed smiled.

“You still think you’re in control.”

Adrian’s expression didn’t move.

“I am.”

The doctor laughed quietly.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“She’s the reason everything is falling apart.”

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?”

The doctor looked at me.

“I protected you.”

I almost laughed.

“Protected me?”

“You think I ruined your life?”

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“You were supposed to be dead.”

The room went silent.

My body went cold.

“What?”

Dr. Reed leaned back.

“The night Leo was born, people came to the hospital to kill him.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“No.”

The doctor shook his head.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

Everyone listened.

“The attack wasn’t because Leo was Adrian’s son.”

A pause.

“It was because Leo and Maya were part of something bigger.”

I looked at my daughter.

My heart started racing.

“What are you talking about?”

Dr. Reed looked at Adrian.

“Your families were connected before you knew it.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

“Seven years ago, your wife and Emily gave birth within hours of each other.”

I froze.

My wife?

No.

Not my wife.

His wife.

Sophia.

Adrian’s late wife.

“That’s impossible.”

The doctor shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You were there.”

Memories came rushing back.

The hospital hallway.

The emergency lights.

The crying babies.

The missing records.

I whispered:

“Sophia
”

Adrian looked at me.

“You knew my wife?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

But then I remembered.

A woman holding my hand.

A woman crying.

A woman saying:

“Please protect my baby.”

I covered my mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“She knew.”

His face changed.

“Knew what?”

“Your wife knew someone was trying to take her baby.”

The room became silent.

Dr. Reed continued.

“And she trusted Emily.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

The doctor looked at me.

“Because Emily was the only person in that hospital who refused to obey.”

I remembered.

I remembered standing in that hallway.

Holding a newborn baby.

Promising a terrified mother I would keep him safe.

But there was something else.

Something I forgot.

A second baby.

A second bracelet.

A second promise.

Then Dr. Reed said the words that destroyed everything.

“Maya isn’t just connected to Leo.”

He looked at me.

“She was the reason Leo survived.”

My breath stopped.

“What does that mean?”

The doctor smiled sadly.

“It means your daughter saved his life before she was even born.”

Nobody spoke.

Then every screen in the security room suddenly turned black.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE BABIES ALONE.

Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.

The guards moved.

Then another message appeared.

NOW WE TAKE BACK WHAT BELONGS TO US.

And below it

A live camera feed appeared.

Showing Maya.

Alone.

May you like

In her bedroom.
