Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LIE

For seven years, I believed my life was built on my choices.

I was wrong.

Every important moment had been touched by someone else’s hand.

My marriage.

My daughter’s records.

My career.

Even the reason I met Adrian Viscari on that airplane.

It was all connected.

And now my little girl was somewhere with the man who destroyed my life.

Adrian stood in the center of the security room, surrounded by people waiting for his orders.

The old Adrian was back.

The man everyone feared.

Cold.

Focused.

Dangerous.

But I saw something nobody else probably noticed.

His hands were shaking.

Only slightly.

But they were.

Because this wasn’t about power.

It wasn’t about money.

It was about children.

“Find Mark,” Adrian said.

A guard nodded.

“We will.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became harder.

“Not eventually. Not tomorrow. Now.”

Everyone moved.

I watched him.

“You blame yourself.”

He didn’t answer.

“You think this happened because you brought danger into our lives.”

Still nothing.

“Adrian.”

Finally, he looked at me.

“I lost my wife.”

His voice was quiet.

“I almost lost my son.”

A pause.

“And now your daughter is missing because of the same people.”

I stepped closer.

“This is not your fault.”

His eyes met mine.

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

I looked toward Leo, who was sleeping in another room under the care of a trusted nurse.

“You saved my daughter before you even knew her.”

He frowned.

“What?”

I took a breath.

Then I told him something Dr. Reed had reminded me of.

Something I had forgotten.

“The night Leo was born, your wife asked me to protect him.”

Adrian froze.

“She knew something was wrong.”

I nodded.

“She gave me a bracelet.”

“What bracelet?”

“A silver one.”

His face changed.

“The bracelet Leo wore?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

“But she didn’t only give me his bracelet.”

I looked down.

“She gave me Maya’s.”

Adrian stared.

“Why?”

I closed my eyes.

“Because Sophia knew someone was trying to switch the babies’ records.”

The room went silent.

“She believed someone wanted to erase their identities.”

Adrian walked closer.

“Why would anyone do that?”

Before I could answer, Dr. Reed spoke from across the room.

“Because of the inheritance.”

Everyone turned.

The doctor looked exhausted.

But finally, he looked honest.

“Adrian’s family and Sophia’s family had a trust agreement.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“What kind of agreement?”

“One that protected children born into both families.”

The doctor swallowed.

“When Sophia discovered someone inside the organization wanted control of that money, she tried to hide the children.”

“And Maya?”

Dr. Reed looked at me.

“Maya was the key.”

I frowned.

“My daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because nobody would suspect a poor nurse’s daughter.”

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Someone powerful could hide a child behind wealth.

But nobody would search for a little girl living a normal life.

Adrian looked furious.

“They used Emily.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“They underestimated me.”

Everyone looked at me.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t the scared woman running away.

I was the mother who wanted her daughter back.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression changed.

“What?”

A pause.

“Where?”

He grabbed his coat.

I stood.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“We found Mark.”

My heart stopped.

“Where is Maya?”

Adrian’s eyes became cold.

“He has her.”

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“You stay here.”

I stared at him.

“Absolutely not.”

“Emily—”

“She’s my daughter.”

My voice broke.

“But she’s also part of this because of your world.”

Adrian went silent.

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to protect me by leaving me behind.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then something unexpected happened.

Adrian nodded.

“Okay.”

The guards looked surprised.

Because nobody told Adrian Viscari what to do.

But I did.

And he listened.

“Let’s bring our children home.”

Then the doctor spoke one final sentence before we left.

A sentence that changed everything.

“Adrian
”

Everyone stopped.

“The person with Mark isn’t working against you.”

A pause.

“They’re working with someone much closer.”

Adrian turned.

“Who?”

Dr. Reed looked terrified.

“The person who ordered Sophia’s death.”

The room went silent.

Because the enemy wasn’t outside.

May you like

The enemy had been inside all along.
