Chapter 3 - THE SECRET HIDDEN IN MY PAST

I should have been angry.
I should have stood up.
I should have walked away.
But I didnât.
Because Adrian Viscari was looking at me like he had just discovered something impossible.
âWhat did you find?â I asked.
He didnât answer immediately.
That worried me more.
Dangerous people usually spoke quickly.
Honest people thought before they spoke.
Adrian looked at his sleeping son.
Then back at me.
âYou were a nurse.â
I stayed silent.
âI already know that.â
âSo?â
âSo you werenât just any nurse.â
My heartbeat slowed.
âWhat does that mean?â
His eyes narrowed.
âYou worked at St. Maryâs Womenâs Hospital in Ohio.â
I felt my stomach drop.
âHow do you know that?â
âI told you.â
His voice was calm.
âI have people who find information.â
âThatâs not normal.â
âNo.â
He didnât deny it.
âIt isnât.â
I looked away.
Suddenly, the airplane felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Because the man sitting across from me wasnât just a wealthy businessman.
He was someone who could uncover my entire life in minutes.
Including the parts I wanted buried.
Including Mark.
Including the night I escaped.
Adrian noticed my reaction.
âWho hurt you?â
The question surprised me.
I looked at him.
âWhat?â
âSomeone scared you.â
I said nothing.
âYou move like someone who expects danger.â
My throat tightened.
âYou donât know me.â
âNo.â
His voice became softer.
âBut I know fear.â
That answer caught me off guard.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Maya woke up.
âMommy?â
I immediately turned.
âIâm here, sweetheart.â
She rubbed her eyes.
Then she saw the baby.
âWhoâs that?â
I smiled gently.
âHis name is Leo.â
Maya looked at him.
âHe was sad.â
The innocence of her words almost broke me.
âYes.â
âHe needed his mommy?â
I nodded.
âYeah.â
Maya looked at Adrian.
âYou should hug him more.â
The cabin became completely silent.
I expected Adrian to be offended.
InsteadâŠ
He looked at my daughter.
And something in his face changed.
âMaybe youâre right.â
Maya smiled.
Then she fell asleep again.
I looked at Adrian.
âYouâre different with him.â
He looked confused.
âDifferent?â
âYou can control everything around you.â
A pause.
âBut not him.â
His eyes dropped.
âNo.â
His voice was quiet.
âNot him.â
For the first time, I saw the man behind the reputation.
A lonely man.
A tired man.
A father carrying a burden nobody else understood.
Then the plane shook.
A sudden drop.
Passengers gasped.
The lights flickered.
And Adrianâs body reacted instantly.
His hand moved toward his jacket.
Not to protect himself.
To protect his son.
I saw it.
A hidden weapon.
A man trained for violence.
My heart raced.
The plane stabilized.
But something else happened.
One of Adrianâs men rushed forward.
âBoss.â
Adrian looked up.
âWhat?â
The man leaned close.
His expression was serious.
âSomeone accessed your private files.â
Adrianâs face turned cold.
âWhich files?â
The bodyguard looked at me.
Then answered.
âHer files.â
My blood turned cold.
Adrian slowly looked at me.
Someone was digging into my past.
Someone knew I was on this plane.
Someone knew I had helped his son.
And suddenly I understood.
I wasnât just a random passenger anymore.
I was connected to something dangerous.
Adrian leaned closer.
His voice was barely a whisper.
âEmilyâŠâ
âWho are you really running from?â
I opened my mouth.
But before I could answerâŠ
My phone rang.
A number I hadnât seen in four days.
A number I prayed I would never see again.
Mark.
My husband.
The man I escaped from.
Adrian looked at the screen.
Then at me.
And the expression in his eyes changed.
Because he finally understood.
The woman who saved his sonâŠ
May you like
Was running from someone who was not finished hunting her.
