Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH I BURIED FOR YEARS

I couldn’t breathe.

I stared at the photograph.

My hands shook.

The image showed me.

Younger.

Wearing my old hospital uniform.

Holding a newborn baby.

Leo.

But something was wrong.

The date on the picture.

Seven years ago.

“That’s impossible.”

My voice barely came out.

Adrian looked at me.

“Explain.”

I looked at the photo again.

“I never met him before that night.”

“You just said you saw him at birth.”

“Yes.”

“Then how is this picture seven years old?”

I had no answer.

Because nothing made sense.

Adrian took the picture.

His eyes scanned every detail.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark in the corner.

A hospital stamp.

His expression changed.

“Where was this taken?”

I swallowed.

“St. Mary’s.”

The same hospital.

The same place where everything began.

Adrian looked at his men.

“Find every record from that night.”

A bodyguard nodded.

Then left.

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to grab Maya and run.

But I couldn’t.

Because deep down, I knew.

Running was how I survived before.

But running wouldn’t protect me now.

“Emily.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Tell me the truth.”

His voice wasn’t angry.

That made it harder.

“I need to know if my son is in danger.”

I closed my eyes.

Then finally said the words I had carried for years.

“I was fired from St. Mary’s.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because I reported something.”

“What?”

“A missing medical file.”

Silence.

“The night Leo was born, there was another baby.”

Adrian stared.

“Another baby?”

I nodded.

“A baby who was supposed to be transferred.”

“What happened?”

“He disappeared.”

The room became colder.

“I told the hospital administration.”

“And?”

“They told me I was confused.”

I looked down.

“Then they accused me of stealing medication.”

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“That’s why you left nursing?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

I laughed quietly.

Because the answer was painful.

“Who would believe me?”

A powerful man.

A hospital.

A missing baby.

A nurse with no money.

I had lost.

Or at least

That’s what I thought.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

And his expression changed.

“What?”

A pause.

“Say that again.”

He looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Find her.”

My heart stopped.

“Find who?”

Adrian slowly lowered the phone.

“The other baby.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The baby who disappeared that night.”

He looked at the photo in his hand.

“She wasn’t missing.”

My stomach dropped.

“She was hidden.”

I stared.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at me.

And the answer destroyed everything.

“Your daughter.”

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t speak.

“That’s impossible.”

Adrian’s eyes were serious.

“Emily
”

He looked toward Maya.

“Your daughter’s birth records were changed.”

The world disappeared.

Because suddenly the baby sleeping beside me wasn’t just my daughter.

She was connected to the same mystery that almost killed Adrian’s son.

And someone had spent years making sure we never discovered the truth.
