Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CAME TO TAKE ME BACK

The first thing I heard was Markâs voice.
The second thing I heard was Adrianâs men drawing their weapons.
The airport was chaos.
People ran in every direction.
Children cried.
Announcements echoed through the dark terminal.
But all I could hear was him.
My husband.
The man I escaped from.
âEmily.â
Mark stepped out from the shadows.
He looked exactly the same.
Same expensive jacket.
Same confident smile.
Same eyes that always made me feel like I was the problem.
Except nowâŠ
He wasnât looking at me like his wife.
He was looking at me like something he owned.
âYou really thought you could disappear?â
My hands tightened around Maya.
âSheâs not going anywhere with you.â
Adrianâs voice cut through the noise.
Mark looked at him.
Then smiled.
âSo this is him.â
The air changed.
Adrian stepped forward.
âYou know who I am?â
Mark laughed softly.
âEveryone knows who you are.â
That answer worried me.
Because Mark didnât look afraid.
He looked prepared.
Adrian noticed too.
âWhy are you here?â
Mark glanced at Leo.
Then back at me.
âI came for my wife.â
âNo.â
My voice was stronger than I expected.
âIâm not your wife anymore.â
Markâs smile disappeared.
âYou donât get to decide that.â
Maya buried her face against me.
That small movement made something inside Adrian shift.
He looked at my daughter.
Then at Mark.
And I saw anger.
Not loud anger.
The dangerous kind.
The controlled kind.
âYou hurt her.â
Mark looked amused.
âThatâs what she told you?â
I froze.
Because those words sounded familiar.
The same words he used every time.
The same way he turned everything around.
âSheâs unstable,â Mark continued.
âShe runs away. She makes accusations. She creates drama.â
I felt sick.
Because for so long, I had listened to those lies.
Adrian looked at me.
And quietly asked:
âIs that true?â
My eyes met his.
âNo.â
One word.
But this timeâŠ
I believed it.
âNo, itâs not.â
Markâs expression hardened.
âYou donât know what sheâs capable of.â
Adrian took one step forward.
âAnd you donât know what Iâm capable of.â
The entire area went silent.
Mark finally looked uncertain.
Then something unexpected happened.
He smiled.
Because he knew something.
âYou should ask her about the hospital.â
My heart stopped.
Adrianâs face changed.
âWhat about the hospital?â
Mark looked directly at me.
âTell him.â
I said nothing.
âTell him why you really worked there.â
My breathing became shallow.
Because there was one thing I never told anyone.
Not my cousin.
Not my friends.
Not even myself.
A secret I buried years ago.
Adrian noticed my silence.
âEmily.â
His voice was quiet.
âWhat is he talking about?â
I looked at Mark.
Then at Leo.
And I realizedâŠ
The truth I had hidden wasnât just about me.
It was connected to Adrianâs son.
âI didnât tell you everything.â
Adrian stared.
âWhat didnât you tell me?â
Before I could answerâŠ
A gunshot exploded through the terminal.
Everyone dropped.
Adrian grabbed Leo.
His men surrounded us.
And when I looked backâŠ
Mark was gone.
But on the ground beside where he stood was a small envelope.
With my name written on it.
EMILY CARTER.
And insideâŠ
Was a picture of me holding baby Leo seven years earlier.
Except that was impossible.
May you like
Because Leo was only three years old.
TO BE CONTINUEDâŠ
