Chapter 5 - THE FIANCÉE’S LIE

Vanessa Whitmore had always believed one thing.
Everyone had a price.
Money.
Power.
Fear.
Everyone could be controlled.
Except Dominic Moretti.
She had forgotten that.
“You’re choosing her?”
Vanessa’s voice shook.
Dominic stood across from her.
“This is not about choosing.”
“Yes, it is.”
She stepped closer.
“You barely know that girl.”
Dominic looked at her.
“And you know too much.”
That sentence destroyed her confidence.
Because it was true.
Vanessa had known Hannah before Dominic ever met her.
She had recognized her immediately.
And she had panicked.
“Tell me why.”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Tell me why you attacked her.”
Still nothing.
Dominic’s patience disappeared.
“Why did you say she should have stayed dead?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
The secret was no longer hidden.
“You heard that?”
“Yes.”
She looked away.
“Then you know.”
“I know nothing.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what she is.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“Then explain.”
Before Vanessa could answer, the mansion alarm exploded.
Everyone froze.
Marco rushed inside.
“Boss.”
“What happened?”
“Someone broke into the east wing.”
Dominic turned.
“Who?”
Marco looked toward the hallway.
“Hannah.”
Dominic’s heart stopped.
They found her standing in Eleanor’s room.
Holding an old photograph.
A photograph of a young woman.
A woman who looked exactly like Hannah.
Dominic picked it up.
“Who is she?”
Hannah’s eyes filled with emotion.
“My mother.”
A silence followed.
Then Eleanor spoke from the doorway.
“She was my closest friend.”
Dominic turned.
His mother looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Regretful.
“I promised I would protect her daughter.”
Dominic stared.
“From who?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“From people in this house.”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
The enemy was not outside.
May you like
It was inside.
