Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT EMILY CARTER

The vault remained locked for nearly twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes was nothing to Dominic Moretti.

He had survived situations where seconds decided whether he lived or died.

But this was different.

Because the enemy wasn’t outside.

It was someone who shared his blood.

Finally, Marco forced the emergency system open.

The door released.

But Anthony was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A recording.

Dominic picked up the device.

His father’s voice played.

“If you are hearing this, then someone failed to protect the truth.”

Everyone became silent.

The recording continued.

“Dominic, I need you to understand something. The people you trust most may be the ones who betrayed you.”

Dominic looked at Eleanor.

She lowered her eyes.

His father continued.

“Emily Carter discovered illegal activity within our organization. She tried to expose it.”

The recording paused.

Then:

“She was not killed because she knew too much.”

Hannah held her breath.

“She was targeted because she refused to stay silent.”

Dominic looked at her.

For the first time, he understood.

Hannah’s silence was not weakness.

It was a promise.

A promise she made to a woman who died trying to tell the truth.

The recording continued.

“Dominic, if Emily’s daughter is alive, protect her.”

The room went still.

Dominic looked at Hannah.

“Daughter?”

Hannah closed her eyes.

She had hidden the truth for years.

But now there was no reason.

“My real name is Emily Carter Jr.”

Dominic said nothing.

“I changed it because everyone connected to my mother was being hunted.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her voice cracked.

“Because everyone who knew the truth disappeared.”

A painful silence followed.

Dominic wanted to be angry.

He wanted answers.

But when he looked at her, he saw something else.

A young woman who had spent eight years running from people who wanted her erased.

“You came here because of my family.”

Hannah nodded.

“I needed proof.”

“And after?”

She looked down.

“I planned to leave.”

The answer bothered him.

More than he expected.

“Why?”

“Because people around you get hurt.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“That’s my decision.”

Hannah looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“I understand exactly.”

Before she could respond, Vanessa appeared at the entrance.

Everyone turned.

She looked exhausted.

“I know where Anthony is.”

Dominic stared.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because he knows I betrayed him.”

A pause.

“And he’s coming for me too.”

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

On the screen was a message.

A threat.

A photo.

A target.

Dominic looked closer.

The target was not Vanessa.

It was Hannah.

The message contained only one sentence.

“Finish what we started.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

May you like

Because Anthony wasn’t hiding anymore.

He was declaring war.
