Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT DOMINIC MORETTI BROKE HIS OWN RULES

The first thing Dominic Moretti heard when he stepped inside his mansion was the sound of someone screaming.

The second thing he heard was leather striking flesh.

Crack.

The sound echoed through the marble hallway like a gunshot.

Dominic stopped walking.

For twenty years, he had trained himself to recognize danger before anyone else could see it.

A strange car outside his gate.

A nervous glance from a stranger.

A pause before someone answered a question.

Those small details had kept him alive in a world where trusting the wrong person could get you buried.

But tonight, the danger was inside his own home.

His home.

His family.

His fiancée.

Dominic removed his hand from his coat pocket and walked faster.

The moment he reached the grand hallway, he saw the crowd.

Almost one hundred and fifty guests stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Men wearing expensive watches and custom-made suits.

Women covered in diamonds and designer gowns.

Powerful people who controlled companies, banks, and political connections.

But none of them moved.

None of them spoke.

Because every single one of them had watched something happen.

And every single one of them had chosen silence.

Dominic’s eyes moved through the crowd.

Then he saw her.

Hannah Reed.

The new maid.

Twenty-six years old.

A woman who had only worked at the Moretti estate for twelve days.

She stood against the marble wall with her back pressed tightly against it.

Her black housekeeping uniform was torn near the shoulder.

Her hair had fallen from its neat style.

Her arms were raised in front of her face.

Not fighting.

Not attacking.

Just protecting herself.

In front of her stood Vanessa Whitmore.

Dominic’s future wife.

Vanessa looked perfect.

Her champagne-colored silk dress had not a single wrinkle.

Her blonde hair was styled flawlessly.

The diamond bracelet around her wrist was the same bracelet Dominic had personally placed there three months earlier.

She looked like royalty.

Except for the object in her hand.

An old leather riding strap.

A family heirloom.

A piece that had belonged to Dominic’s grandfather.

Vanessa lifted it again.

“Get on your knees.”

Hannah didn’t move.

That made Vanessa’s expression darken.

“I said get on your knees.”

The guests looked away.

Some pretended not to notice.

Some looked uncomfortable.

But nobody stepped forward.

The strap moved.

And then—

Dominic caught Vanessa’s wrist.

The entire mansion became silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

The kind of silence that happens when everyone realizes the most dangerous person in the room has arrived.

Vanessa slowly turned her head.

Her anger disappeared.

“Dominic…”

He released her wrist.

But his eyes never left her face.

“What happened?”

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

A nervous laugh.

The kind people use when they know they have been caught.

“Nothing. Really. This looks worse than it is.”

Dominic looked past her.

At Hannah.

The maid lowered her arms slowly.

Three red marks crossed her forearm.

A small cut near her wrist had begun bleeding.

Dominic removed his jacket.

Then he walked toward her.

Vanessa watched in disbelief.

“Dominic, what are you doing?”

He ignored her.

He placed the jacket over Hannah’s shoulders.

The expensive fabric covered the torn uniform.

Hannah looked shocked.

“Sir…”

“Can you stand?”

She blinked.

“I’m already standing.”

There was no anger in her voice.

No complaint.

No attempt to make Vanessa look guilty.

That bothered Dominic more than tears would have.

He turned toward the guests.

“Who saw what happened?”

Nobody answered.

A famous attorney suddenly looked interested in his shoes.

A businessman checked his phone even though it wasn’t ringing.

An elderly woman near the staircase looked down.

Dominic understood immediately.

They had all seen.

They simply didn’t want to become involved.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She embarrassed me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Explain.”

“She was serving my mother wine.”

“Our guests’ wine.”

Vanessa forced a smile.

“Our guests.”

She pointed at Hannah.

“She grabbed the glass from my hand.”

Dominic looked at Hannah.

“Did you?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Why?”

The room waited.

Hannah hesitated.

Only for a second.

“The rim was dirty.”

Several guests exchanged looks.

Vanessa laughed.

“See? She admits it.”

But Dominic didn’t laugh.

Because he noticed something.

Hannah wasn’t trying to defend herself.

She wasn’t trying to win.

She simply answered.

A liar usually built a story.

A guilty person usually apologized too quickly.

Someone hiding something usually said too much.

Hannah had said almost nothing.

And somehow that made him more curious.

Dominic turned toward Walter Bell.

The family steward who had served the Moretti household for nearly forty years.

“Take the strap.”

Walter stepped forward.

Dominic handed it to him.

“Put it back in the locked cabinet.”

Walter accepted it immediately.

Vanessa stared.

“You’re making me look like a monster.”

Dominic finally looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“You did that yourself.”

The words hit harder than shouting.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Dominic…”

He stepped closer.

“You embarrassed a woman who works in this house because you believed nobody would stop you.”

“That girl disrespected me.”

Dominic looked at Hannah’s injured arm.

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“She protected herself.”

Vanessa looked around.

She expected someone to support her.

Nobody did.

For the first time that evening, she realized something.

Dominic Moretti could forgive many things.

But cruelty was not one of them.

He turned toward the guests.

“The party continues.”

Nobody moved.

Dominic’s eyes hardened.

“That was not a suggestion.”

Slowly, the crowd disappeared back into the ballroom.

But before they left, Dominic spoke again.

“Before this night ends, I will know why a woman was attacked in my hallway while everyone watched.”

The guests froze.

Then they walked away faster.

Thirty seconds later, only Dominic, Vanessa, Hannah, and Walter remained.

Vanessa stepped toward him.

“You’re choosing a servant over your future wife?”

Dominic looked at her.

“No.”

He glanced at Hannah.

“I’m choosing not to marry someone who believes another human being matters less because of a job title.”

Vanessa stared at him.

The humiliation on her face was obvious.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Dominic’s expression didn’t change.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But tonight, you’re the one who should.”

Vanessa walked away.

Her heels echoed against the marble floor.

Hannah slowly removed Dominic’s jacket.

“I’ll stain it.”

“I own another.”

A faint smile appeared on her face.

“Men like you usually own dozens.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Then you understand why I’m not worried about one jacket.”

For a moment, Hannah almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she looked away.

Like she remembered she wasn’t allowed to.

Walter guided her toward the kitchen pantry.

Dominic followed a few steps behind.

Then stopped.

Something about Hannah bothered him.

Not the injuries.

Not the fear.

The silence.

He had seen people terrified before.

People begged.

People cried.

People lied.

But Hannah Reed had taken a beating in front of powerful strangers and still refused to say one cruel word about Vanessa.

That was not normal.

Inside the pantry, Walter opened the first-aid kit.

“I’m calling Dr. Keller.”

“No.”

Hannah answered instantly.

Walter frowned.

“You have an open wound.”

“It’s nothing serious.”

“That is not your decision.”

Hannah ignored him.

She washed her hands.

Then arranged the supplies.

Carefully.

Almost professionally.

Antiseptic.

Gauze.

Bandage.

Tape.

Every movement was controlled.

Dominic watched from the doorway.

She cleaned the wound perfectly.

Checked her fingers.

Adjusted the bandage.

Checked again.

Walter stared.

“Where did you learn that?”

Hannah froze.

Only for a moment.

“People who cannot afford doctors learn how to survive.”

Walter studied her.

“That wasn’t an answer.”

Hannah closed the medical kit.

“It’s the only answer I can give.”

Dominic walked away before she noticed him.

But now he knew.

The new maid wasn’t ordinary.

And the secret she carried was bigger than a broken rule inside his mansion.

Much bigger.

Because the next morning, Dominic Moretti would discover that Hannah Reed had not entered his home by accident.

Someone had sent her there.

And the reason would force him to question the one thing he trusted most.

May you like

His own family.
