Chapter 15 - THE DEBT HE COULD NEVER REPAY

Three weeks later, the Moretti mansion was quiet.

For the first time in years.

No threats.

No secrets.

No lies hiding behind expensive walls.

Anthony Moretti was gone.

His empire collapsed after the evidence from the vault was released.

The people who helped him were arrested.

The hidden accounts were exposed.

And the Moretti family name survived.

But Dominic Moretti was different.

Because some battles changed a person forever.

He stood outside the hospital room window.

Watching Hannah sleep.

The doctors said she was lucky.

The bullet had missed anything fatal.

But Dominic knew something else.

Luck had nothing to do with it.

Hannah had spent her entire life protecting others.

Now someone had finally protected her.

When she opened her eyes, Dominic was there.

“You’re still here.”

His voice was quiet.

“Of course.”

“You have an empire to run.”

“I have people to run it.”

She looked away.

“You don’t have to stay because you feel guilty.”

Dominic frowned.

“I’m not here because I feel guilty.”

“Then why?”

He was silent.

Because the answer was simple.

And somehow harder to say.

“Because when you walked into my house, everyone thought you were powerless.”

Hannah watched him.

“But you weren’t.”

He sat beside her.

“You were the strongest person in that room.”

A small smile appeared.

“You caught me protecting myself.”

“No.”

Dominic shook his head.

“I watched you survive.”

The room became quiet.

For the first time, neither of them needed to hide.

Months later, the Moretti estate changed.

The staff no longer feared the halls.

The house no longer felt like a prison.

And Hannah Reed was no longer called a maid.

She became the person who helped rebuild everything.

The woman who exposed the truth.

The woman who saved the family that once destroyed hers.

One evening, Dominic found her standing in the conservatory overlooking Lake Michigan.

The same place where everything began.

“You still come here.”

Hannah smiled.

“It’s peaceful.”

Dominic stood beside her.

“Do you ever regret coming here?”

She thought for a moment.

“Yes.”

He looked surprised.

“Really?”

“I regret that I lost eight years running.”

A pause.

“But I don’t regret finding the truth.”

Dominic looked at the frozen lake.

“Neither do I.”

Hannah smiled.

“You know, when I first came here, I thought people like you couldn’t understand people like me.”

Dominic looked at her.

“And now?”

She smiled.

“Now I think maybe people like us were just waiting to find each other.”

For years, Dominic Moretti believed every debt could be paid.

Money.

Power.

Promises.

But Hannah taught him the one thing he never understood.

Some debts cannot be repaid.

They can only be honored.

And the greatest debt he ever carried…

Was not the money he owed.

It was the life of the woman who reminded him that even the coldest hearts could still choose to be human.
