Chapter 4 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED

Ethan had spent seven years searching for answers.
But he never expected the truth to hurt this much.
The next morning, he sat across from Emma in a quiet coffee shop near the park where everything had changed.
Lena sat between them, eating a chocolate muffin while watching both adults carefully.
She was only seven years old.
But she already knew something was wrong.
Children could feel when grown-ups were hiding pain.
Ethan placed the old photograph on the table.
The same photograph that had shattered his entire world.
âTell me everything.â
Emma looked down.
âI donât know where to start.â
âStart with why you let me believe you were dead.â
The words were calm.
But the pain behind them was impossible to hide.
Emma swallowed.
âBecause I thought if you knew I was alive⊠you would come after me.â
Ethan frowned.
âCome after you?â
She looked at him.
âYou donât understand what happened.â
âThen help me understand.â
For a moment, Emma said nothing.
Then she reached into her bag and pulled out an old envelope.
It was worn.
The edges were damaged.
Like it had been touched thousands of times.
âWhat is that?â
âThe reason I left.â
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
His hands froze.
The headline was from seven years ago.
LOCAL BUSINESS HEIR DIES IN PRIVATE PLANE ACCIDENT.
Ethan looked confused.
âThatâs not my name.â
Emma nodded.
âNo.â
She pointed at the picture.
âBecause it was supposed to be you.â
The air left his lungs.
âWhat?â
Emmaâs eyes filled with tears.
âDaniel arranged everything.â
Ethan stared.
âMy brother?â
âHe knew about the flight. He knew where you would be. He knew how to make everyone believe you were gone.â
âThat makes no sense.â
âI know.â
Emmaâs voice cracked.
âBecause I didnât believe it either.â
She looked at Lena.
âUntil the night someone broke into our house.â
Ethan became still.
âWhat happened?â
Emma closed her eyes.
âI was eight months pregnant.â
The memory returned.
The fear.
The darkness.
The sound of broken glass.
âI woke up because I heard someone downstairs.â
She gripped her coffee cup.
âI thought it was you coming home early.â
âBut it wasnât.â
Emma shook her head.
âIt was Daniel.â
Ethanâs face hardened.
âWhat did he want?â
âHe wanted documents.â
âWhat documents?â
âThe ones proving you planned to transfer part of the company shares to me and our child.â
Ethan remembered.
The family trust.
The papers he had prepared before Lena was born.
He had wanted to make sure Emma and their baby were protected.
Daniel knew.
And he wanted everything.
âHe threatened you?â
Emma nodded.
âHe told me if I stayed with you, Lena would never be safe.â
Ethan looked at his daughter.
A wave of guilt hit him.
âYou should have told me.â
Emmaâs eyes filled.
âI tried.â
âThen why didnât you?â
âBecause the next dayâŠâ
She stopped.
Her voice became smaller.
âThe next day, I received a video.â
Ethan leaned forward.
âWhat video?â
Emma looked terrified.
âA video of Daniel talking to someone.â
âWho?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat did he say?â
Emma whispered:
âHe said he had already arranged your death.â
Ethan went silent.
Lena stopped eating.
âDaddyâŠâ
The word escaped her mouth before she realized it.
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked at her.
His eyes filled instantly.
She had never called him that before.
âSay it again.â
Lena looked embarrassed.
âIâŠâ
Ethan smiled sadly.
âItâs okay.â
But before he could say more, his phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One sentence that made his blood run cold.
I told you to leave the past buried. Now Iâm coming for what belongs to me.
Attached was a picture.
A picture of Lena.
Taken that morning.
Outside the coffee shop.
Ethan stood up immediately.
âThey know where we are.â
Emmaâs face turned white.
âEthanâŠâ
He grabbed Lenaâs hand.
âWeâre leaving.â
But before they reached the doorâŠ
A car crashed through the front window.
Glass exploded everywhere.
People screamed.
Emma grabbed Lena.
Ethan threw himself over them.
And when the smoke clearedâŠ
A familiar voice whispered from outside.
âHello, brother.â
Daniel was standing there.
Smiling.
