Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Seven years.

That was how long Ethan Cole had lived with a question that never had an answer.

Why did his wife disappear?

Everyone told him the same thing.

“She’s gone.”

“She left.”

“She moved on.”

But Ethan never believed it.

Not completely.

Because people could leave.

People could change.

But Emma would never abandon him without a reason.

Not the woman who used to hold his hand during thunderstorms.

Not the woman who cried when they adopted their first dog.

Not the woman who promised him on their wedding day:

“If life gets hard, we fight together.”

But she disappeared anyway.

And now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Older.

Terrified.

And holding grocery bags beside the little girl who had his eyes.

“Ethan
”

Emma’s voice cracked.

The name felt strange coming from her mouth.

A name she had not spoken in years.

Lena looked up at her mother.

“Mom, why does he know you?”

Emma opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there were too many lies to explain.

Too many years to repair.

Too much pain hiding behind one simple question.

“Lena, sweetheart
”

Emma walked closer.

“Go wait by the bench for a minute, okay?”

The little girl looked between them.

“No.”

Her answer surprised both adults.

“I want to know.”

Ethan looked at the child.

His heart broke.

She wasn’t just a little girl asking questions.

She was a child who deserved the truth.

Emma looked away.

“Lena
”

“No.”

The girl hugged her red bucket.

“You always tell me not to lie.”

That sentence hurt Emma more than anything.

Because her daughter was right.

She had spent years teaching honesty.

While hiding the biggest truth of all.

Ethan took a slow breath.

“Is she my daughter?”

The park became silent.

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

Lena looked at her mother.

Then at Ethan.

She didn’t understand why those words felt so heavy.

Finally

Emma whispered:

“Yes.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

For one second, he couldn’t move.

Seven years.

Seven years of missing birthdays.

Missing first words.

Missing scraped knees.

Missing bedtime stories.

Missing everything.

His voice broke.

“You knew?”

Emma started crying.

“Yes.”

“You knew I was alive?”

“Yes.”

“You knew I spent years looking for you?”

Every word became sharper.

Every word carried years of pain.

“I thought you were dead.”

Emma looked down.

“I know.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You know?”

His voice rose.

“You know what it feels like to bury someone who isn’t dead?”

People nearby started looking.

Emma wiped her tears.

“I was trying to protect her.”

Ethan stared.

“Protect her from me?”

“No.”

“Then from what?”

Emma looked at Lena.

Fear crossed her face.

A fear Ethan had never seen before.

And that scared him.

“What happened, Emma?”

She didn’t answer.

Because the truth was more dangerous than the lie.

Seven years ago, Emma didn’t leave because she stopped loving Ethan.

She left because someone threatened to destroy them both.

Someone powerful.

Someone Ethan thought he could trust.

Someone who had promised to protect his family.

Lena noticed her mother’s fear.

“Mom?”

Emma reached for her.

But Ethan spoke first.

“Who hurt you?”

Emma looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then she said the one name Ethan never expected.

“Your brother.”

The blood drained from Ethan’s face.

“My brother?”

Emma nodded.

“Daniel.”

Ethan stepped back.

“No.”

“He told me if I stayed, he would destroy you.”

“That’s impossible.”

“He said you would lose everything.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Daniel loved you.”

Emma gave a painful smile.

“No.”

She whispered.

“He wanted what you had.”

Before Ethan could respond, his phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Then again.

Finally, he answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You found her.”

Ethan froze.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“You should have left the past buried.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Where did you get this number?”

The voice laughed softly.

“Ask your wife what happened the night she disappeared.”

The call ended.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Emma looked terrified.

Because she knew.

The past wasn’t coming back.

It had already found them.

CLIFFHANGER:

Ethan thought finding Emma was the end of the mystery.

May you like

He was wrong.

It was only the beginning.
