Chapter 14 - THE FALL OF DANIEL COLE

The abandoned warehouse stood at the edge of the city.

Cold.

Dark.

Empty.

The perfect place for someone like Daniel.

Someone who believed shadows gave him power.

But Daniel made one mistake.

He forgot that the truth was stronger than fear.

Ethan entered alone.

Exactly as Daniel requested.

“Ethan.”

Daniel stepped out from the darkness.

Smiling.

“You came.”

Ethan looked around.

“Where is Lena?”

Daniel laughed.

“Straight to business.”

“My daughter.”

Daniel walked closer.

“She really loves you.”

Ethan said nothing.

“That surprised me.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“I spent years trying to erase you.”

“And she still chose you.”

He looked angry.

“You know what hurts the most?”

Ethan stared.

“You?”

Daniel laughed.

“No.”

He pointed at himself.

“I was always better than you.”

“I was smarter.”

“I was stronger.”

“But everyone loved you.”

Ethan finally understood.

Daniel wasn’t angry about money.

He was angry because he felt invisible.

“You wanted my life.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“I wanted people to see me.”

A voice suddenly came from behind.

“Then maybe they should see this.”

Daniel froze.

Emma stepped out.

Behind her were police officers.

And Arthur.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You lied.”

Ethan looked at him.

“No.”

“I stopped playing by your rules.”

Daniel looked around.

“You think this changes anything?”

Arthur held up the evidence.

“It changes everything.”

Daniel’s confidence disappeared.

The police moved closer.

Daniel stepped backward.

“You don’t understand.”

He looked at Ethan.

“If I go down, you lose too.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

Daniel smiled.

“Your father’s company.”

“The public will know everything.”

Ethan walked closer.

“I don’t care.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“You don’t care?”

“No.”

Ethan looked toward Emma.

Then toward Lena, who was being brought out by an officer.

“I spent seven years without my family.”

He looked back at Daniel.

“I’m not losing them again.”

For the first time

Daniel looked afraid.

Lena ran toward Ethan.

“Daddy!”

Ethan dropped to his knees.

He hugged her tightly.

The moment he had dreamed about.

The moment he thought would never happen.

“I’m sorry.”

His voice broke.

“I’m so sorry I wasn’t there.”

Lena hugged him.

“You came.”

Those two words destroyed him.

Because she didn’t blame him.

She just loved him.

Behind them, Daniel was arrested.

But as police took him away

He smiled.

Ethan noticed.

And that worried him.

Because Daniel never accepted defeat.

Not completely.

Later that night, Ethan sat beside Lena’s bed.

She was finally home.

Emma stood in the doorway.

“He’s gone.”

Ethan looked up.

“Is he?”

Emma sighed.

“You’re still worried.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked at the sleeping child.

“Because people like Daniel don’t lose because they’re caught.”

“Then why?”

“Because they finally realize nobody will save them.”

Emma smiled slightly.

“You sound different.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I am.”

“Why?”

He looked at Lena.

“Because I’m not fighting for revenge anymore.”

A pause.

“I’m fighting for my family.”

CLIFFHANGER:

Daniel was behind bars.

May you like

But Ethan knew one final battle remained.

Forgiving the past.
