Chapter 3 - THE SECRET EMMA HID FOR SEVEN YEARS

That night, Lena watched her mother pack a suitcase.

And for the first time in her life

She saw fear in Emma’s eyes.

Not normal worry.

Not stress.

Real fear.

The kind that made adults look smaller.

“Mom?”

Emma stopped.

She quickly wiped her face.

“Sweetheart, why aren’t you asleep?”

Lena stood in the doorway holding her favorite stuffed rabbit.

“Are we leaving?”

Emma froze.

Children noticed things adults thought they didn’t.

Especially fear.

Especially sadness.

“Why would you think that?”

“Because you only pack when we leave.”

Emma forced a smile.

“Oh, honey
”

But she couldn’t finish.

Because a knock suddenly came from the front door.

Three slow knocks.

Emma’s face changed.

The suitcase slipped from her hand.

Lena noticed.

“Mom?”

Emma whispered:

“Go to your room.”

“But—”

“Now, Lena.”

Her voice was sharper than usual.

That scared Lena more than the knocking.

She ran upstairs.

Emma walked toward the door.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked through the window.

And her heart dropped.

A black car was parked outside.

A man stood beside it.

A man she had spent seven years trying to escape.

Daniel Cole.

Ethan’s older brother.

The man who destroyed her life.

The man who convinced everyone she had died.

The man who threatened to take her daughter away.

Emma stepped back.

“No
”

The door opened before she could reach it.

Daniel walked inside like he owned the place.

“Hello, Emma.”

She stared at him.

“How did you find me?”

Daniel smiled.

“You always underestimated me.”

“You stayed away from us.”

“Because Ethan was watching.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?”

Daniel looked around the small house.

Then smiled.

“You really thought you could hide here forever?”

“You ruined my life.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You ruined mine.”

Emma laughed in disbelief.

“You tried to destroy your own brother.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Your husband had everything.”

“He loved you.”

“He had the company.”

“He had the respect.”

Daniel’s eyes turned cold.

“And everyone chose him.”

Emma shook her head.

“You were jealous.”

Daniel smiled.

“Maybe.”

Then he leaned closer.

“But now I have something Ethan cares about more than money.”

Emma’s face went pale.

“Stay away from Lena.”

Daniel smiled.

“There she is.”

Emma stepped in front of the stairs.

“You will never touch my daughter.”

Daniel laughed.

“Your daughter?”

A pause.

Then he whispered:

“Let’s see what Ethan thinks when he learns the full truth.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“What truth?”

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

And Lena, who had been secretly listening, covered her mouth.

Because she heard the next words.

Words that changed everything.

Daniel said:

“Tell him what happened the night she was born.”

Emma went completely still.

And upstairs

Lena realized there was another secret.

May you like

A secret even her mother had hidden.

A secret about the day she came into the world.
