Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE OF BROKEN PROMISES

Ethan hadn’t stepped inside his childhood home in years.

Too many memories lived there.

His father’s office.

His mother’s garden.

The place where he and Daniel grew up.

A place that once felt safe.

Now it felt like a trap.

The front door was unlocked.

That scared him more than a locked door would have.

“Stay behind me.”

Ethan looked at Emma.

She nodded.

They entered.

The house was dark.

Dust covered the furniture.

Pictures still hung on the walls.

But one picture was missing.

The family portrait.

The one with Ethan and Daniel.

“Someone was here recently.”

Emma whispered.

Ethan looked around.

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

She pointed.

“Daniel always hated this house.”

“Why?”

“Because this was the one place your father chose you over him.”

Ethan looked at the old staircase.

He remembered.

His father had once told him:

“Being a leader isn’t about being the strongest. It’s about protecting people.”

Daniel heard those words.

And he hated them.

A noise came from the basement.

Ethan immediately moved.

The basement door was open.

Inside were boxes.

Old files.

Photos.

Records.

Everything Daniel had collected.

Ethan opened a box.

Inside were pictures of him.

Hundreds of them.

Business meetings.

Family events.

His wedding.

Emma holding newborn Lena.

A disturbing pattern appeared.

Every photo had been marked.

Red circles.

Notes.

Dates.

Daniel had been watching them.

Studying them.

Planning.

Emma found another file.

Her hands shook.

“Ethan.”

He turned.

“What?”

She opened it.

Inside were medical records.

Lena’s.

Ethan grabbed them.

He read the first page.

Then stopped.

“What is it?”

He looked at Emma.

“These are fake.”

She froze.

“What?”

“These records say Lena was born without a father.”

Emma shook her head.

“That’s what Daniel wanted people to believe.”

Ethan flipped through the pages.

Then he found something else.

A letter.

From the hospital.

The original.

His hands trembled.

Because it confirmed everything.

Lena was legally his daughter.

Daniel had forged the documents.

But there was one more thing.

A note attached to the letter.

Written by Daniel.

Ethan read it.

And his face changed.

“What does it say?”

He handed it to Emma.

She read the words.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"If Ethan ever finds out the truth, use the girl. He will destroy himself trying to save her."

Emma covered her mouth.

“He planned this.”

Ethan stared at the letter.

No emotion.

No anger.

Nothing.

That scared Emma.

“Ethan?”

He looked up.

“I’m done playing defense.”

Before she could answer, the basement lights suddenly turned on.

A slow clap came from upstairs.

Daniel.

“Beautiful speech.”

Ethan looked toward the stairs.

Daniel stood there.

Smiling.

“Always the hero.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You used your own niece.”

Daniel laughed.

“Niece?”

He walked down slowly.

“You still don’t understand.”

Ethan stared.

“Understand what?”

Daniel smiled.

“Lena was never the target.”

A pause.

“You were.”

The room went silent.

Daniel continued:

“I didn’t want your company.”

“I didn’t want your money.”

He looked at Ethan.

“I wanted you to feel what I felt.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel smiled.

“When our father died
”

He stopped.

“And left you everything
”

His voice became bitter.

“I realized something.”

“I could never beat you.”

“So I decided
”

“To break you.”

Suddenly, Ethan’s phone rang.

A video message.

Daniel smiled.

“Your daughter has something to say.”

Ethan answered.

Lena appeared on the screen.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was standing beside someone else.

Someone Ethan never expected.

His father’s old lawyer.

The man who handled the family trust.

Ethan’s face went pale.

Because the lawyer said:

“Mr. Cole
”

“We need to talk about who really owns the company.”

CLIFFHANGER:

May you like

Ethan thought Daniel stole his life.

But now he discovered someone else had been controlling everything from the beginning.
