Chapter 9 - THE OTHER BOY

The words were carved deep into the wood.
ASK ABOUT THE OTHER BOY.
Daniel stared at them.
Four simple words.
But they felt heavier than any confession.
Because everyone in the shed reacted.
Except him.
Ethan looked confused.
Noah looked terrified.
And Claire…
Claire looked like she had just seen a ghost.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“What other boy?”
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.”
Her eyes moved away.
“Tell me.”
Still nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“After everything tonight, you still want to keep secrets?”
Claire swallowed.
“It’s not that simple.”
Daniel laughed once.
A bitter, broken laugh.
“Nothing with you is ever simple.”
The words hurt her.
He could see it.
But this time, Daniel didn’t care.
Because his son had spent years afraid.
And he was done protecting the wrong person.
“No more lies.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
Then Noah.
Then finally at Daniel.
“There was another child.”
The air disappeared from the room.
Daniel stared.
“Another child?”
Noah closed his eyes.
Like he already knew.
“Who?”
Claire whispered:
“His name was Lucas.”
The ride back to the farmhouse was silent.
Nobody spoke.
Not even Claire.
Daniel drove with both hands tight on the steering wheel.
His mind was full of questions.
Too many questions.
Three children.
Three secrets.
A missing father.
A hidden past.
A woman who had built her entire life on lies.
When they reached the house, Daniel immediately called the police.
Claire didn’t stop him.
That surprised him.
Maybe because she knew she had run out of places to hide.
Maybe because she was finally tired.
Ethan sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket.
Noah sat beside him.
Two boys who had never met before that night.
Two boys who somehow understood each other.
Daniel watched them.
And realized something painful.
Both of them had spent years believing they were alone.
He walked into the kitchen.
Claire was standing there.
Looking out the window.
“You knew Victor would come.”
She didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And you still stayed here?”
“I thought I could control him.”
“You thought?”
She closed her eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Who is Lucas?”
Claire was quiet for a long time.
Then she spoke.
“He was my first mistake.”
Daniel felt anger rise.
“Don’t call a child a mistake.”
Claire looked down.
“You’re right.”
For the first time, she sounded human.
Not cold.
Not manipulative.
Just broken.
“Lucas was my son.”
Daniel waited.
“He was eight years old.”
A pause.
“And Noah was six.”
Daniel frowned.
“You had two sons?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
“Where is Lucas now?”
Her silence answered before her words did.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“You don’t know?”
“He disappeared.”
“Like Noah?”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
Something about her answer was different.
More painful.
“What happened?”
Claire sat down.
For the first time, she looked exhausted.
“I was married to a man named Thomas.”
“Lucas and Noah’s father?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of man was he?”
Claire looked away.
“A dangerous one.”
Daniel didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Was Claire a victim?
Was she a monster?
Could she somehow be both?
“Thomas hurt us.”
Her voice became quiet.
“He hurt the boys.”
Daniel looked toward the living room.
At Ethan.
His stomach turned.
“But that doesn’t explain everything.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
“Then explain.”
She took a deep breath.
“Thomas found out I was planning to leave.”
“And?”
“He threatened to take the boys away.”
Daniel waited.
“Then Victor showed up.”
The name alone changed her expression.
“Victor worked for Thomas.”
Daniel frowned.
“Worked for him?”
Claire nodded.
“He helped Thomas hide money. He helped him intimidate people.”
“And you trusted him?”
“No.”
She looked down.
“I was afraid of him.”
A long silence.
“Then what happened the night Noah disappeared?”
Claire’s hands began shaking.
“Thomas and Victor were fighting.”
“About what?”
“Money.”
“Then?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“The barn caught fire.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“The boys were inside.”
His heart dropped.
“What happened?”
Claire whispered:
“I ran in.”
The room became silent.
“I found Noah.”
Daniel listened.
“But Lucas…”
She stopped.
“Where was Lucas?”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I heard him screaming.”
Daniel felt sick.
“But I couldn’t reach him.”
Silence.
“Then Victor pulled me away.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Why would he do that?”
Claire looked at him.
“Because he knew the truth.”
“What truth?”
Claire’s voice dropped.
“That Lucas wasn’t trapped.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“He was taken.”
By who?”
Claire didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t need to.
Daniel already knew.
Victor.
Hours later, the police arrived.
Statements were taken.
Questions were asked.
But Daniel barely heard any of them.
His mind was somewhere else.
With Lucas.
The boy nobody talked about.
The boy who disappeared between two stories.
The boy who might still be alive.
Near sunrise, Daniel walked outside.
Midnight was standing beside the barn.
He approached slowly.
The horse lowered her head.
Daniel touched her neck.
“You knew.”
The horse stayed still.
“You knew all along.”
Then something caught his eye.
A small piece of paper tied beneath Midnight’s old leather tag.
Daniel carefully removed it.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
“I found Lucas. He is alive.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Below the sentence was a location.
An abandoned facility outside town.
And underneath…
A name.
Victor.
Daniel looked toward the dark road.
Because suddenly the biggest mystery wasn’t what happened ten years ago.
It was this:
If Lucas was alive…
May you like
Why had someone spent a decade making sure nobody found him?
And the answer was waiting somewhere in the darkness.
