Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WITH TWO NAMES

Daniel stared at the old police report on his computer screen.

For almost a minute, he didn’t move.

He didn’t blink.

He didn’t breathe normally.

Because the name written at the top of the page wasn’t Claire Carter.

It was someone else.

“Emily Rose Walker.”

Daniel whispered the name to himself.

“No…”

He clicked through the document again.

Same face.

Same woman.

Different name.

Different life.

The photo attached to the report showed Claire ten years younger.

But there was no mistaking it.

The same eyes.

The same cold expression.

The same woman who was now sleeping under his roof.

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

His hands felt numb.

How could he not know?

How could he spend years with someone and know nothing about them?

Then he saw the reason the report existed.

“Child endangerment investigation.”

His stomach dropped.

He kept reading.

The case had been closed.

No conviction.

No charges.

But there was one name mentioned several times.

A child.

A little boy.

Daniel stopped scrolling.

The room became silent.

Because the boy’s age was listed.

Six years old.

The same age as Ethan.

“No…”

Daniel whispered.

He closed the laptop.

But the truth was already in his mind.

Claire had a past.

A dangerous one.

And somehow, Ethan had discovered something about it.

Something she was desperate to hide.

A noise behind him made him turn.

Claire was standing in the doorway.

Watching him.

“How long have you been looking through my things?”

Daniel’s heart jumped.

But he didn’t show it.

“What’s Emily Walker?”

The color disappeared from Claire’s face.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

And that was enough.

“Where did you find that name?”

“You tell me.”

Claire slowly walked into the room.

“You went through my private files?”

“You lied to me.”

Her expression hardened.

“I changed my name.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted a fresh start.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the truth.”

Daniel stood.

“No, Claire. The truth is you had another name, another life, and a police report connected to a child.”

Silence.

Heavy silence.

Then Claire laughed.

A small, bitter laugh.

“You actually think you understand what you’re reading?”

“I’m trying to.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You’re judging me.”

“Shouldn’t I?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what happened.”

“Then tell me.”

Claire looked away.

For the first time, Daniel saw something unexpected.

Not anger.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

Real fear.

But it disappeared quickly.

“You should ask your son what he saw.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Claire smiled slightly.

“Because that’s what this is really about, isn’t it?”

“What did Ethan see?”

Instead of answering, Claire walked away.

And that scared Daniel more than if she had screamed.

Because Claire wasn’t defending herself.

She was waiting.

Like she knew something he didn’t.

That night, Ethan refused to sleep.

He sat on his bed holding Midnight’s old leather tag.

Daniel sat beside him.

“Buddy, I need you to tell me the truth.”

Ethan nodded.

“About Claire?”

“Yes.”

The boy looked down.

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

“Are you going to leave?”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“Never.”

Ethan was quiet.

Then he spoke.

“Before we lived here… Claire had another family.”

Daniel felt a chill.

“What family?”

“She had a little boy.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What was his name?”

Ethan looked terrified.

“I don’t know.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire said his name was never supposed to be spoken.”

Daniel swallowed.

“What happened to him?”

Ethan squeezed the leather tag.

“He disappeared.”

The room went completely silent.

“Disappeared?”

Ethan nodded.

“Claire said he ran away.”

“But you don’t believe that.”

The boy shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked toward the window.

Because outside stood Midnight.

Watching the house.

Waiting.

“Because the horse knows.”

Daniel frowned.

“Ethan, horses don’t know things like people do.”

The boy shook his head.

“No, Daddy.”

His voice became serious.

“She remembers.”

Daniel didn’t know what to say.

Then Ethan whispered:

“The boy was here.”

Daniel felt his blood run cold.

“What?”

“The little boy.”

Ethan pointed toward the barn.

“He was here before us.”

A million questions exploded inside Daniel’s head.

Before he could ask another one, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through.

“Is this Daniel Carter?”

“Yes.”

“You need to get your son away from that woman.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Who is this?”

The voice became quieter.

“Someone who knows what Claire did.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

A pause.

Then:

“She didn’t change her name because she wanted a new life.”

Daniel’s heart pounded.

“Why did she change it?”

The man answered:

“Because she was running from what happened to her first son.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

The little boy was staring back at him.

Terrified.

The stranger continued:

“And if Claire realizes Ethan knows the truth…”

The line crackled.

“Your son will disappear too.”

The call ended.

Daniel stood frozen.

Then he heard a sound behind him.

A soft creak.

Someone standing at the bedroom door.

He slowly turned.

Claire was there.

Holding Ethan’s old notebook.

The same notebook Daniel thought he had hidden.

She looked at him.

Then at Ethan.

And smiled.

“You really shouldn’t have believed him.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Who?”

Claire lifted the notebook.

“The boy who wrote those lies.”

Ethan started crying.

“No…”

Claire took one step closer.

Because she knew.

She knew everything.

And she knew Ethan had finally talked.

The secret was no longer buried.

But before Daniel could protect his son, Claire said four words that changed everything:

“I know where he is.”
