Chapter 5 - THE BOY WHO VANISHED

For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not Daniel.
Not Ethan.
Not even Claire.
The only sound inside the bedroom was the rain tapping against the window.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
“What did you just say?”
Claire held Ethan’s notebook in her hand.
“I said…”
She looked directly at Ethan.
“I know where he is.”
Ethan’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Daniel immediately moved in front of his son.
“Stay away from him.”
Claire tilted her head.
“Protective now?”
“Claire.”
“No, Daniel. You want the truth, don’t you?”
Her voice changed.
The sweet, careful voice she used around other people disappeared.
This was the real Claire.
Cold.
Controlled.
“You’ve spent the entire night looking at me like I’m a monster.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I found a police report about a missing child.”
“You found half a story.”
“Then tell me the other half.”
Claire smiled.
“That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.”
She threw the notebook onto the bed.
“Your son has been filling his head with things he doesn’t understand.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I saw him.”
Claire looked at him.
And the room became colder.
“Saw who?”
Ethan’s lips trembled.
“The boy.”
Daniel looked at his son.
“What boy, Ethan?”
The little boy pointed toward the old barn.
“The one Claire says doesn’t exist.”
Claire’s face changed.
Just for a moment.
But Daniel saw it.
A reaction.
Fear.
“Ethan,” Claire said quietly.
“Don’t.”
The child immediately stepped back.
Daniel noticed.
He noticed everything now.
The fear.
The silence.
The way Ethan obeyed before thinking.
“What happened to that boy?”
Daniel asked.
Claire didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked toward the window.
“His name was Noah.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Noah?”
“Yes.”
“Your son?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer shocked him.
But then came the question he couldn’t stop himself from asking.
“What happened to him?”
Claire stared outside.
“He died.”
Ethan gasped.
“No.”
Claire turned.
“Ethan.”
“You’re lying.”
Daniel looked at his son.
“Why would you say that?”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because Midnight knows.”
Claire suddenly became angry.
“Stop talking about that horse.”
The sudden explosion surprised everyone.
Especially Daniel.
Because Claire had never sounded afraid of anything.
Except that horse.
“Why?” Daniel asked.
“Why are you so scared of Midnight?”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened in that barn ten years ago?”
Claire said nothing.
And that silence was the answer.
Twenty minutes later, Daniel was sitting in the kitchen with Ethan.
Claire had locked herself upstairs.
Or at least that’s what Daniel thought.
He had called the number from the mysterious man.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then he received a text message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Check the old barn floor.”
Daniel stared at the message.
His first instinct was to ignore it.
But something told him he couldn’t.
He grabbed a flashlight.
“Stay here.”
Ethan immediately grabbed his arm.
“Daddy, don’t go.”
“I’ll be right back.”
“No.”
The fear in Ethan’s voice stopped him.
“Please.”
Daniel knelt down.
“Why?”
The boy whispered:
“Because that’s where Claire buried the truth.”
Daniel felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
Ethan looked toward the barn.
“She told me never to go there.”
“Why?”
“Because she said some things should stay dead.”
Daniel stood.
That sentence followed him as he walked outside.
The old barn was darker than before.
The storm had passed, but the wind still moved through the broken walls.
Daniel walked slowly.
Every step sounded louder.
He reached the center of the barn.
Then he noticed something.
The floorboards.
One section looked newer.
Like someone had replaced them recently.
Daniel crouched down.
He touched the wood.
Fresh nails.
Fresh cuts.
Someone had been hiding something.
He grabbed a crowbar.
And pulled.
The first board came loose.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Underneath was a small metal box.
Daniel’s hands shook as he opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Old letters.
And a small child’s bracelet.
The name engraved on it made Daniel stop breathing.
NOAH.
He picked up the first photograph.
It showed Claire.
Ten years younger.
Standing beside a little boy.
A little boy who looked exactly like Ethan.
Daniel felt sick.
Then he found a letter.
Written by Claire.
The date was ten years old.
The first line destroyed everything.
“Dear Noah,
I’m sorry Daddy will never know what really happened to you.”
Daniel dropped the paper.
“No…”
He kept reading.
Every sentence made the truth darker.
Noah hadn’t run away.
Noah hadn’t disappeared.
Someone had lied.
Someone had covered it up.
Then he heard a sound.
A footstep behind him.
Daniel turned.
The flashlight moved across the darkness.
Nobody.
“Who’s there?”
Silence.
Then a voice came from the corner.
A child’s voice.
Soft.
Broken.
“You found it.”
Daniel froze.
The flashlight shook.
“Who said that?”
Slowly, a figure stepped forward.
Not an adult.
A child.
A boy.
Pale.
Terrified.
Daniel stared.
Because the boy looked exactly like the photograph.
Exactly like Ethan.
The boy whispered:
“My name is Noah.”
Daniel couldn’t move.
“Noah?”
The child nodded.
Then he looked toward the farmhouse.
And said the words that made Daniel’s blood turn cold.
“Claire told everyone I was dead…”
A pause.
“But she never told them why I survived.”
Behind Daniel, the barn door slowly closed.
And standing outside in the darkness…
May you like
Was Claire.
Watching.
