Chapter 8 - THE MAN BEHIND THE LIE

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like whoever stood outside already knew they had nowhere to run.

Daniel pulled Ethan closer.

Noah stepped backward until his shoulders hit the wall.

His face had lost all color.

“Daddy…”

Ethan whispered.

Daniel looked down.

“Stay behind me.”

“But who is that?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he already knew one thing.

Whoever was outside wasn’t here to help.

The footsteps stopped.

Then the man spoke again.

“Emily.”

Claire’s old name.

The name nobody was supposed to know.

“You have five seconds to open this door.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy was shaking.

“Who is he?”

Noah swallowed hard.

“His name is Victor.”

The name meant nothing to Daniel.

But the fear in Noah’s voice meant everything.

“What did he do?”

Noah looked at the floor.

“He helped Claire hide.”

A loud bang hit the door.

Ethan jumped.

Daniel wrapped an arm around him.

“It’s okay.”

But it wasn’t.

Nothing about this night was okay.

A second bang.

The old wooden door cracked.

Victor’s voice came again.

“You should have listened to me, Emily.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

Emily.

Not Claire.

Not the woman he married.

The woman behind the mask.

“You lied to me,” Victor continued.

“And now your mistake is standing between us.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

Mistake?

He looked at Noah.

The boy wasn’t a mistake.

He was a child.

A child who had been abandoned.

A child who had been erased.

The third hit almost broke the door.

Daniel searched the shed desperately.

A window.

A tool.

Anything.

Then he saw it.

An old axe hanging beside the wall.

He grabbed it.

“Daniel…”

Noah whispered.

“You can’t fight him.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Victor doesn’t stop.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of fear.

“What did he do to you?”

Noah looked away.

“He told me nobody would believe a kid.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“That’s what Claire told Ethan.”

Noah nodded.

“They learned from each other.”

Outside, Claire stood beside Victor.

She watched the door shake.

“You said you could handle this.”

Victor looked at her.

His face was emotionless.

“I said I could fix problems.”

His eyes moved toward the shed.

“This is your problem.”

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“You helped me.”

“I helped myself.”

The words hurt her.

For the first time, Claire realized something.

Victor was not her partner.

He never was.

He was just another person using her.

“You promised.”

Victor smiled.

“Promises are for people who still believe they have choices.”

Claire stared at him.

The rain had stopped.

But she felt colder than ever.

Because she finally understood.

She had spent ten years running from one monster.

Only to become trapped by another.

Inside the shed, Daniel found a small window near the ceiling.

Too high.

Too small.

But maybe enough.

He lifted Ethan.

“Can you climb through?”

Ethan looked scared.

“What about you?”

“I’ll follow.”

“What about Noah?”

Daniel looked at the boy.

“No one gets left behind.”

For a second, Noah looked shocked.

Like nobody had ever said those words to him.

Then—

CRASH.

The door broke.

A piece of wood fell to the ground.

Victor’s hand appeared through the opening.

Daniel grabbed the axe.

“Back away!”

Victor stopped.

He looked inside.

His eyes landed on Noah.

And something changed.

Not surprise.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“Well…”

Victor whispered.

“Look who finally came home.”

Noah stepped back.

“You.”

Victor smiled.

“You’re taller.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Who are you?”

Victor ignored him.

He stared at Noah.

“Your mother searched everywhere for you.”

Noah’s voice shook.

“She thought I was dead.”

Victor smiled.

“She wanted people to think that.”

Daniel’s anger exploded.

“What happened to Noah’s father?”

Victor looked at him.

Then laughed.

A cold laugh.

“You really don’t know anything, do you?”

Daniel raised the axe.

“Tell me.”

Victor tilted his head.

“Claire didn’t make Noah disappear.”

Silence.

“What?”

Victor looked at Noah.

“She tried.”

Daniel felt confused.

“Then who did?”

Victor smiled.

“I did.”

The room went silent.

Noah covered his mouth.

“No…”

Victor continued.

“Your father found out too much.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You killed him?”

Victor didn’t answer.

But his silence was enough.

Daniel moved forward.

Then suddenly—

A gunshot exploded outside.

Everyone froze.

The bullet hit the wooden wall inches from Daniel’s head.

Ethan screamed.

Victor stepped back.

“Time to stop talking.”

Daniel grabbed the children.

The shed filled with panic.

Another shot.

Another crack.

Then the impossible happened.

Claire ran inside.

Not away.

Toward them.

She grabbed Victor’s arm.

“Stop!”

Victor looked at her.

“You’re protecting them now?”

Claire’s eyes filled with anger.

“I’m protecting my son.”

Victor laughed.

“Which one?”

Claire froze.

The question destroyed her.

Because she knew exactly what he meant.

Noah.

Ethan.

Two boys.

Two secrets.

Two lives she had damaged.

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, he saw something different.

Regret.

Real regret.

But before anyone could speak, Victor pulled free.

And whispered:

“You should ask Claire why Noah’s father wasn’t the only person who disappeared that night.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

His heart sank.

“What does he mean?”

Claire said nothing.

Victor smiled.

Because he knew.

He had just opened the final door.

And behind it was the truth Claire had spent ten years burying.

Then Victor ran into the darkness.

Leaving everyone behind.

Except for one thing.

A final message carved into the wooden door.

May you like

Four words.

“ASK ABOUT THE OTHER BOY.”
