Chapter 13 - THE LAST LIE

The gunshot echoed through the abandoned building.
Then came silence.
A terrifying silence.
Daniel opened his eyes.
For one second, he didn’t understand what he was seeing.
Then he saw the blood.
“Claire!”
She was on the floor.
Her hand pressed against her side.
She had moved.
She had stepped in front of Ethan.
She had taken the bullet.
Ethan screamed.
“Claire!”
Daniel froze.
Because no matter what she had done…
No matter how many lies she had told…
In that moment, she hadn’t protected herself.
She had protected his son.
Victor stared at the gun in his hand.
His face changed.
Shock.
Regret.
Fear.
“I…”
He looked at Claire.
“I didn’t…”
Nobody believed him.
Not even himself.
Thomas sighed.
“What a waste.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You’re unbelievable.”
Thomas looked calm.
Almost bored.
“You all still don’t understand.”
Daniel’s anger burned.
“You shot her.”
“No.”
Thomas looked at Victor.
“He did.”
Victor’s face twisted.
“You used me.”
Thomas smiled.
“You were always easy to control.”
Those words hit Victor harder than the gunshot.
Because they were true.
Daniel rushed to Claire.
“Stay awake.”
Claire looked up.
Her breathing was weak.
“Ethan…”
“He’s okay.”
She looked toward him.
“Good.”
Daniel pressed his hand against the wound.
“Why?”
Claire looked confused.
“Why what?”
“Why did you do that?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I should have protected him from the beginning.”
Daniel didn’t know what to say.
For years, he believed Claire was the person he needed to protect his son from.
Now she was the reason Ethan was alive.
But that didn’t erase everything.
It didn’t erase the fear.
The manipulation.
The years of silence.
A person could save someone and still have caused damage.
Both things could be true.
The police arrived minutes later.
The building was surrounded.
Victor dropped the weapon.
He didn’t fight.
He just stood there.
Broken.
Thomas tried to escape.
But Lucas stopped him.
“You’re not leaving again.”
Thomas looked at his son.
For the first time, he looked almost afraid.
“You think they’ll believe you?”
Lucas stepped forward.
“I don’t need everyone to believe me.”
A pause.
“I just need someone to finally hear me.”
Thomas was arrested.
But before they took him away, he looked at Daniel.
“You think this ends with me?”
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas smiled.
“You still don’t know who started all of this.”
The officer pulled him away.
But his words stayed.
Because Daniel knew.
There were still unanswered questions.
Three days later.
The ranch was quiet.
Too quiet.
The storm was gone.
But the damage remained.
Claire was recovering in the hospital.
Noah and Lucas were staying with Daniel and Ethan.
For the first time in years…
The brothers had a home.
Daniel sat outside the barn.
Midnight stood beside him.
“You knew.”
The horse moved closer.
“You knew there was something wrong.”
Daniel touched her neck.
“You tried to warn Ethan.”
The horse stayed still.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A small scar on Midnight’s collar.
A mark he had never seen before.
He looked closer.
A number.
Not a name.
A code.
The same code he had seen in Thomas’s files.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“No…”
He ran back inside.
He opened the documents from the facility.
He searched.
Family files.
Child records.
Horse records.
Then he found it.
Midnight wasn’t just a horse.
She was part of the evidence.
A witness.
The only living witness from ten years ago.
And there was another note attached.
“Subject M-17 witnessed transfer.”
Transfer.
Not accident.
Not disappearance.
Transfer.
Someone moved people.
Someone moved children.
Daniel felt sick.
Because that meant Noah and Lucas weren’t the only victims.
There were more.
That evening, Claire asked to see him.
Daniel entered the hospital room.
For a while, neither spoke.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“I know you hate me.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.”
She nodded.
“That’s fair.”
He sat down.
“Tell me everything.”
Claire looked away.
“I can’t.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you…”
She stopped.
“What?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“They’ll come for Ethan.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“The people behind Thomas.”
Daniel stood.
“I thought Thomas was the top.”
She shook her head.
“He wasn’t.”
“Then who is?”
Claire took a deep breath.
“The person who created the entire system.”
Daniel waited.
“Who?”
Claire whispered a name.
A name that made Daniel’s blood freeze.
Because he knew it.
Everyone knew it.
A respected person.
A powerful person.
Someone nobody would ever suspect.
Then Claire said:
“He has been watching Ethan since the day he was born.”
Daniel felt his heart stop.
“What?”
Claire looked at him.
“I tried to keep Ethan away from him.”
“By lying to me?”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
“But I failed.”
A silence.
Then Claire grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“You have to listen to me.”
Her voice became desperate.
“If he knows Ethan is still protected…”
“Who?”
Claire’s eyes filled with fear.
“The man who started everything.”
Before Daniel could ask another question…
The hospital lights suddenly went out.
The room went dark.
A nurse screamed in the hallway.
Then a voice came through the hospital speaker.
Calm.
Controlled.
Familiar.
“Daniel Carter.”
Everyone froze.
The voice continued.
“You spent your whole life protecting your family.”
A pause.
“Now let’s see how well you protect them when the truth comes home.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
She was shaking.
Because she recognized the voice.
And she whispered the words Daniel never wanted to hear.
“He found us.”
The speaker went silent.
Then one final message played.
“Ethan was never the target.”
May you like
A pause.
“He was the key.”
