Chapter 10 - THE PLACE WHERE CHILDREN DISAPPEARED

The abandoned facility sat at the edge of town.
Nobody went there anymore.
The old building had been closed for years.
Broken windows.
Rust-covered doors.
Tall weeds growing through the cracks in the pavement.
The kind of place people forgot existed.
The kind of place where secrets survived.
Daniel parked the truck outside the gate.
He looked at the note again.
“I found Lucas. He is alive.”
Those six words had kept him awake all night.
Because if they were true…
Everything changed.
Noah sat in the passenger seat.
Ethan was in the back, wrapped in a jacket, refusing to stay home.
“I’m coming with you,” Ethan had said.
“No.”
“Daddy…”
“Ethan, this could be dangerous.”
The little boy looked down.
Then quietly said:
“So was the barn.”
Daniel had no answer.
Because his son was right.
The place that was supposed to be safe had been the most dangerous place of all.
Finally, Daniel agreed.
But he made one promise.
“You stay close to me. No matter what happens.”
Ethan nodded.
“I promise.”
Noah stared at the building.
His hands were shaking.
“You’ve been here before?”
Daniel asked.
The boy nodded.
“Once.”
“When?”
“After I escaped.”
Daniel turned.
“You escaped from Victor?”
Noah looked away.
“Yes.”
The answer shocked him.
“How?”
Noah was quiet for a moment.
“Someone helped me.”
“Who?”
The boy swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel frowned.
“You don’t know?”
“They covered their face.”
A pause.
“But they told me one thing.”
“What?”
Noah looked at the abandoned building.
“They said…”
His voice became softer.
“Don’t trust the woman who saves you.”
Daniel felt a chill.
Because he knew exactly who that woman was.
Claire.
The front door was unlocked.
That scared Daniel more than if it had been locked.
Someone had been there recently.
Inside, the air smelled old and damp.
The hallway was covered in dust.
But footprints were visible on the floor.
Fresh footprints.
Daniel raised his flashlight.
“Someone is here.”
Noah grabbed Ethan’s hand.
The two boys moved closer together.
Daniel walked ahead.
Every step echoed.
Then they found the first room.
An office.
Old files covered the desk.
Daniel searched quickly.
Most of the papers were destroyed.
But one folder remained.
A name was written on it.
LUCAS WALKER.
Daniel opened it.
The first page was a medical report.
Patient.
Lucas Walker.
Age: 8.
Daniel’s heart started racing.
He kept reading.
“Subject transferred under private arrangement.”
Private arrangement?
By who?
He turned the page.
Then stopped.
A photograph fell onto the floor.
Daniel picked it up.
A picture of Lucas.
Older.
Not eight years old anymore.
A teenager.
Alive.
Behind the photo was a handwritten note.
“He knows the truth.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Who knows the truth?”
A voice answered from the doorway.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
Claire stood there.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What are you doing here?”
She looked exhausted.
“I followed you.”
“You shouldn’t have.”
“I had to.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“No. You wanted to control the situation.”
Claire shook her head.
“You still don’t understand.”
“No, Claire. I understand plenty.”
His voice became colder.
“You lied about Noah.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about Lucas.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about who you really are.”
Tears formed in her eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel stopped.
The answer surprised him.
No excuses.
No manipulation.
Just a confession.
“Why?”
Claire looked at the photograph in his hand.
“Because every time I told the truth…”
She swallowed.
“Someone got hurt.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And every time you lied?”
Claire couldn’t answer.
Because she knew.
Every lie hurt someone too.
A loud noise came from deeper inside the building.
Everyone froze.
A door slammed.
Daniel moved immediately.
“Stay here.”
Claire grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.”
He looked at her hand.
She released him.
“Don’t go alone.”
For the first time, Daniel heard fear in her voice.
Not fake fear.
Real fear.
They followed the sound.
At the end of the hallway was a locked room.
Inside, something was moving.
Daniel grabbed the handle.
“Who’s in there?”
No answer.
Then a voice.
A young man’s voice.
“Dad?”
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel looked at her.
The door opened.
And standing inside was someone none of them expected.
A teenager.
Thin.
Tired.
But alive.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Lucas…”
The boy stared at her.
His eyes were full of pain.
“You came back.”
Claire started crying.
“Lucas…”
But he stepped away.
“Don’t.”
The word broke her.
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re Lucas?”
The teenager nodded.
“Yes.”
Noah stepped forward.
“Lucas?”
The two brothers stared at each other.
Ten years of missing memories between them.
Then Lucas whispered:
“You’re alive.”
Noah started crying.
“So are you.”
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Two brothers.
Finally reunited.
Then Lucas looked at Daniel.
His expression changed.
“You’re Ethan’s dad?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Lucas looked at Ethan.
Then back at Daniel.
“You need to take him and leave.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Lucas looked toward Claire.
Because he was afraid of her.
No.
Not her.
Someone else.
“Because Victor isn’t the only person who knows this place exists.”
A cold silence filled the room.
“What do you mean?”
Lucas walked toward an old cabinet.
He opened it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Names.
Dates.
Pictures.
Children.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
“How many?”
Lucas whispered:
“More than you think.”
Claire looked horrified.
“What did you find?”
Lucas looked at her.
“The reason Victor kept me alive.”
A pause.
“The reason he kept Noah hidden.”
Another pause.
“And the reason Ethan was never supposed to come to this ranch.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Lucas pointed at the files.
“Because your son wasn’t chosen by accident.”
Daniel felt the world stop.
“What are you saying?”
Lucas looked directly at him.
“Claire didn’t find you.”
“She was sent to you.”
The room went silent.
And for the first time…
May you like
Daniel wondered if the woman he thought was destroying his family…
Had been placed inside it from the very beginning.
