Chapter 3 - THE BOY WHO STOPPED TALKING

The next morning, Daniel woke up before sunrise.
He didn’t sleep.
Not really.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Ethan in that barn.
A little boy hiding.
A little boy afraid.
A little boy who had learned how to survive inside his own home.
Daniel looked beside him.
Claire was sleeping peacefully.
Almost peacefully.
Because now he noticed things he had ignored before.
The way she always controlled conversations.
The way she answered questions before Ethan could.
The way Ethan became quiet whenever she entered the room.
How long had this been happening?
Daniel got out of bed.
He walked downstairs.
Ethan was sitting at the kitchen table.
Alone.
Eating cereal.
Quietly.
Too quietly.
“Morning, buddy.”
Ethan looked up.
“Morning, Daddy.”
Daniel smiled.
But his heart hurt.
“Did you sleep okay?”
The boy shrugged.
“Yeah.”
Daniel sat down.
“Ethan.”
The boy stopped eating.
“You can tell me anything.”
A long pause.
Then:
“I know.”
“But?”
Ethan looked toward the stairs.
“Claire said if I tell people things, bad things happen.”
Daniel felt a wave of anger.
“What things?”
“She said Daddy would leave.”
Daniel went silent.
“Leave?”
Ethan nodded.
“She said you would think I was trouble.”
Daniel reached across the table.
“Buddy, look at me.”
Ethan looked up.
“You are not trouble.”
A tear rolled down the boy’s cheek.
“I tried to be good.”
That sentence hurt more than anything else.
Because children weren’t supposed to say that.
Not like that.
Daniel pulled him into a hug.
“You don’t have to earn being loved.”
Ethan held on.
For the first time in a long time.
Then Claire walked into the kitchen.
The moment she appeared, Ethan let go.
Daniel noticed.
Claire noticed him noticing.
“Good morning,” she said.
Nobody answered.
Her smile disappeared.
“What’s wrong?”
Daniel stood.
“We need to talk.”
Claire laughed softly.
“About last night?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel—”
“No more excuses.”
Her face hardened.
“You’re accusing me?”
“I’m asking questions.”
“You’re acting like I’m some monster.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I don’t know who you are right now.”
The words hit her.
For a moment, the mask slipped.
Then she became calm again.
“You’re tired. You’re letting a child manipulate you.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son immediately looked down.
Because he had heard those words before.
Too many times.
That was when Daniel understood something.
Ethan wasn’t afraid of Claire because she yelled.
He was afraid because she had convinced him nobody would believe him.
Later that afternoon, Daniel took Ethan to the barn.
“I want to ask you something.”
Ethan nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
The boy touched Midnight’s neck.
“Because she said you’d be angry.”
“With you?”
Ethan shook his head.
“With her.”
Daniel froze.
“What happened, Ethan?”
The boy looked at Midnight.
“She hurt her.”
“Who?”
“The horse.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
“What did Claire do?”
Ethan whispered:
“She tried to make Midnight leave.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
The horse suddenly moved closer.
Daniel noticed something.
A small scar near Midnight’s shoulder.
An old injury.
“What happened to her?”
Ethan looked terrified.
“I’m not supposed to say.”
“Ethan.”
“She said if Daddy finds out…”
The boy stopped.
“Finds out what?”
Ethan’s voice became barely audible.
“She said Daddy will know what she did before she came here.”
Daniel felt a chill.
Before she came here?
“What does that mean?”
Ethan looked toward the farmhouse.
And whispered:
“Claire wasn’t always Claire.”
That night, Daniel searched through old records.
Marriage papers.
Documents.
Anything about Claire’s past.
Then he found something hidden.
A name he had never seen before.
A name that belonged to the woman he married.
Claire wasn’t the first name she had used.
And the reason she changed it was buried in a police report from ten years earlier.
A report Daniel was never supposed to find.
Because the woman sleeping in his house…
May you like
Had a secret life before she met him.
And someone from that life was coming back.
