Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH ABOUT ETHAN

The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Daniel looked at Claire.
Not as his wife.
Not as the woman he once trusted.
But as someone who had been hiding the biggest secret of all.
“What did he mean?”
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.”
Her lips trembled.
“Daniel…”
“No.”
His voice was low.
“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.”
Ethan stood behind him.
Confused.
Scared.
“Daddy…”
Daniel immediately looked back.
“I’m here.”
But Ethan wasn’t looking at him.
He was looking at Claire.
“Is something wrong with me?”
The question broke something inside the room.
Claire’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked like a mother.
Not a liar.
Not a survivor.
A mother.
“No.”
She stepped forward.
“You are not wrong.”
“Then why is everyone talking about me?”
Claire stopped.
Because she knew she had run out of excuses.
Thomas smiled.
“This is the part I always loved.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“What?”
“Watching people realize they were never in control.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re going to tell me what’s happening.”
Thomas laughed.
“You still think you can demand answers.”
He looked around.
“At this point, Daniel, you should be asking questions.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“Fine.”
He pointed at Ethan.
“Why was my son important?”
Thomas smiled.
“Because Ethan was the reason Claire stayed.”
Claire’s face went pale.
“That’s not true.”
Thomas looked at her.
“You know it is.”
Daniel turned.
“Claire?”
She looked away.
And that was enough.
“Tell me.”
Silence.
“Tell me now.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“When I met you…”
Her voice shook.
“I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with you.”
Daniel felt like the floor disappeared.
“I was assigned to watch you.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Watch Daddy?”
Claire nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Daniel stared.
“For what?”
“Your money. Your property. Your life.”
The words came out like a confession.
“I was supposed to collect information.”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“How long?”
“Three months.”
“But you stayed.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Because of him.”
Daniel looked at his son.
“What does Ethan have to do with this?”
Claire wiped away tears.
“When I met you, you were already a father.”
A pause.
“You were different.”
Thomas interrupted.
“Don’t make yourself sound noble.”
Claire ignored him.
“You loved him.”
She looked at Ethan.
“And I had never seen that before.”
Daniel didn’t know what to say.
“You changed?”
Claire nodded.
“I wanted to leave.”
Thomas laughed.
“But she couldn’t.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Because by then, Ethan was already part of the plan.”
Daniel’s body went cold.
“What plan?”
Thomas walked closer.
“The same plan that created every family on those files.”
He pointed at the documents.
“Find weak people. Enter their lives. Control them.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“And Ethan?”
Thomas smiled.
“He was the perfect connection.”
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You used my son.”
Thomas shrugged.
“Everyone uses something.”
Daniel moved toward him.
But Claire grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?”
Claire’s tears fell.
“I knew they wanted Ethan.”
The room went silent.
Daniel felt sick.
“What does that mean?”
Claire whispered:
“They wanted to take him.”
“Why?”
She looked at Thomas.
“Because Ethan was never supposed to be yours.”
Daniel froze.
The sentence felt impossible.
“What?”
Claire’s voice broke.
“Thomas believed children could be used to control families.”
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son was shaking.
“No…”
Claire rushed toward him.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
But Ethan stepped away.
“You knew?”
The question destroyed her.
“Buddy…”
“You knew someone wanted me?”
Claire cried.
“Yes.”
“And you stayed?”
She couldn’t answer.
Because she had no answer.
The truth came out slowly.
Thomas had created a network.
He found families.
He found weaknesses.
He manipulated people.
And Claire was one of his tools.
But something happened he never expected.
She fell in love.
Not with Daniel.
Not at first.
With Ethan.
A child who reminded her of everything she had lost.
A child she wanted to protect.
But protection built on lies was still a prison.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Thomas?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Ethan.
“Of losing him.”
Ethan wiped his tears.
“You lied because you loved me?”
Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
The boy’s voice cracked.
“That doesn’t make it okay.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“No.”
For the first time…
She accepted it.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Victor appeared in the doorway.
Blood on his shirt.
Breathing heavily.
Thomas looked annoyed.
“You’re late.”
Victor looked at him.
“You didn’t tell me you were coming here.”
Thomas smiled.
“I didn’t need your permission.”
Daniel noticed something.
Victor wasn’t looking at Thomas.
He was looking at Claire.
“You lied to me too.”
Claire froze.
Victor laughed bitterly.
“You said the boys were gone.”
Nobody spoke.
Victor looked at Noah and Lucas.
“You said they were dead.”
Noah stepped back.
Victor’s eyes filled with anger.
“You made me carry your secret for ten years.”
Claire whispered:
“Victor…”
But he raised a gun.
Daniel immediately moved in front of Ethan.
The room exploded with panic.
Thomas smiled.
Because this was exactly what he wanted.
Chaos.
Confusion.
Everyone turning against each other.
Victor pointed the gun.
But not at Daniel.
Not at Ethan.
At Thomas.
“You ruined my life.”
Thomas laughed.
“You were always weak.”
The gun shook in Victor’s hand.
Then a shot rang out.
Everyone screamed.
But when the smoke cleared…
Nobody knew who had been hit.
May you like
And the person lying on the floor…
Was the last person anyone expected.
