Chapter 9 - The Person Who Had Been Watching Us

My feet stopped moving.

My heart stopped beating.

Because standing in the doorway…

Holding Lily’s hand…

Was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone I never thought I would see in that place.

The woman smiled.

But it wasn’t a warm smile.

It was the kind of smile people wear when they know something you don’t.

“Hello, Emma.”

My blood turned cold.

“Mrs. Carter?”

The police officer behind me whispered.

“Do you know her?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because my mind was trying to understand what my eyes were seeing.

It was Sarah Mitchell.

The woman who worked at the adoption agency.

The woman who interviewed us.

The woman who told me Lily needed love.

The woman who told me we were the perfect family for her.

The woman who helped bring Lily into my home.

And now…

She was standing inside an abandoned building connected to the people who destroyed Lily’s childhood.

“Let go of her.”

My voice shook.

Sarah looked down at Lily.

Then back at me.

“You always were protective of her.”

I stepped forward.

“Let go.”

Lily immediately moved behind Sarah.

Not because she trusted her.

Because she was afraid.

And that broke my heart.

“Lily.”

I reached my hand out.

“Come here.”

Lily looked at me.

Then at Sarah.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She knows.”

I froze.

“Knows what?”

Sarah smiled.

“She knows why she was chosen.”

The words made no sense.

“Chosen?”

I looked at Daniel.

He looked just as confused.

“What are you talking about?”

Sarah laughed softly.

“You really never told her?”

She looked at Daniel.

“You kept hiding everything.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Sarah.”

His voice was filled with anger.

“Stay away from her.”

Sarah tilted her head.

“Still protecting people.”

“That’s your biggest weakness.”

The officer raised his weapon slightly.

“Ma’am, step away from the child.”

Sarah didn’t move.

Instead, she looked at me.

“Do you know why Lily was placed with you?”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Because we wanted to adopt her.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

“Because you were the only person who could protect her.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“He never told you.”

Again.

Those words.

Again.

Another secret.

I turned toward Daniel.

“What didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel looked trapped.

“I didn’t know this was connected.”

Sarah smiled.

“Of course you didn’t.”

“You were never supposed to know.”

The officer stepped closer.

“Everyone needs to calm down.”

But Sarah continued.

“Six years ago, Lily’s mother discovered something.”

“She discovered a network.”

“A network of people using children for money and power.”

I felt sick.

“Michael.”

Sarah nodded.

“Michael was just one piece.”

“Richard was another.”

“Your father was another.”

She looked at Daniel.

“And Daniel…”

She paused.

“He was the one who almost exposed everything.”

Daniel’s face became cold.

“Stop.”

Sarah ignored him.

“You think Daniel saved Lily.”

“He tried.”

“But he failed.”

Lily looked at Daniel.

Those words hurt her.

Because they matched her deepest fear.

“You left me.”

Daniel’s face broke.

“I came back.”

“But you left.”

The room became silent.

Daniel lowered his head.

Because he knew she was right.

Sarah looked satisfied.

She wanted that.

She wanted Lily to doubt him.

“Lily, do you remember what happened after Daniel left?”

The second she asked that question…

Lily’s expression changed.

Fear returned.

“Stop.”

I stepped between them.

“Do not talk to her like that.”

Sarah smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

“She doesn’t need protection from me.”

She looked at Daniel.

“She needs protection from the truth.”

I felt anger burning inside me.

“What truth?”

Sarah reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

Another folder.

She threw it toward me.

It landed on the floor.

“Open it.”

I didn’t move.

“Open it, Emma.”

The officer picked it up.

Then handed it to me.

Inside were documents.

Adoption records.

Medical reports.

Background checks.

And one page that made my hands freeze.

A psychological evaluation.

About Lily.

But at the bottom…

Was a signature.

Mine.

I stared.

“That’s impossible.”

Sarah smiled.

“You signed it.”

“No.”

“I never saw this.”

“Yes, you did.”

My head started spinning.

Because the signature looked like mine.

But I knew I had never signed that document.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“Forgery.”

Sarah laughed.

“Exactly.”

The officer looked at her.

“So you forged documents?”

Sarah shrugged.

“I did what I was told.”

“By who?”

For the first time…

Sarah looked nervous.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Someone was above her.

Someone she feared.

“Who told you to do this?”

Sarah said nothing.

The officer stepped closer.

“Answer.”

She looked at Lily.

Then whispered:

“The person who started all of this.”

Everyone waited.

“Who?”

Sarah’s face turned pale.

And then she said a name.

A name that made Daniel completely freeze.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that explained everything.

“Jonathan Carter.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.”

My heart raced.

“Who is Jonathan Carter?”

Daniel looked at me.

His voice barely came out.

“My older brother.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because Jonathan died twenty years ago.”

The room went silent.

Sarah smiled.

And then she said something that changed everything.

“People who control secrets…”

“Don’t always need to be alive.”

Suddenly, every light in the building went out.

Darkness covered the room.

Lily screamed.

And when the emergency lights turned back on…

Sarah was gone.

And so was the folder.

But Lily was still there.

Holding something in her hand.

A small piece of paper.

She handed it to me.

My hands shook as I read it.

Only one sentence was written.

“The real Carter family secret is buried under the house where Lily slept.”

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

May you like

Because he knew exactly which house it meant.

Our house.
