Chapter 3 - The Man Who Tried To Save Her

I stared at the police report in my hands.

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

Because written across the top was my husband’s name.

Daniel Carter.

The same man I had started questioning.

The same man I had secretly wondered if I should fear.

But now I was holding proof that he had tried to protect Lily.

Or at least…

That was what he wanted me to believe.

I looked at him.

Waiting.

Waiting for the explanation that would finally make everything make sense.

“Tell me everything.”

My voice sounded different.

Colder.

More careful.

Daniel sat down slowly.

For the first time since I met him, he looked like a man carrying something too painful to hold.

“I found out what Michael was doing six years ago.”

My fingers tightened around the report.

“What exactly was he doing?”

Daniel looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

Making sure she couldn’t hear.

“He was hurting children who were placed in his care.”

The room went silent.

My stomach turned.

“How many?”

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.”

That answer terrified me more than anything else.

Because it meant there could be more children.

More stories.

More victims.

More secrets.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.”

I almost laughed.

Protecting me?

From what?

From the truth?

From my own husband’s family?

“You don’t get to decide what I can handle.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you hide it?”

His voice cracked.

“Because I failed.”

I didn’t expect that answer.

Daniel had always been confident.

Controlled.

Almost impossible to break.

But now he looked destroyed.

“I was the one person who could have helped her.”

“And I didn’t.”

I looked at the report again.

“What happened?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Michael had been running that emergency foster home for years.”

“He had a good reputation.”

“People trusted him.”

“Social workers trusted him.”

“Families trusted him.”

My chest tightened.

“That’s how people like him hide.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

“He looked like a hero.”

“But behind closed doors…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Behind closed doors, children were terrified.”

A noise came from the hallway.

We both turned.

Lily was standing there.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

She had heard everything.

I immediately walked toward her.

“Sweetheart…”

But she stepped back.

Not from me.

From the conversation.

Like she was afraid the past was coming back.

“I remember the room.”

My heart sank.

“What room?”

She looked down.

“The locked room.”

Daniel went pale.

“Lily…”

She looked at him.

“You were there.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was trying to get you out.”

Lily stared at him.

“But you left.”

Those words destroyed him.

I watched my husband freeze.

Because there was no defense against that.

A child didn’t remember promises.

She remembered who stayed.

And who disappeared.

Daniel lowered his head.

“You’re right.”

“I left.”

“But I didn’t want to.”

Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.

“Everyone says that.”

My heart broke.

Because she wasn’t talking about Daniel anymore.

She was talking about every adult who had failed her.

I sat beside her.

“Lily, can you tell me what happened?”

She stayed quiet.

For several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“Michael had a room downstairs.”

Daniel immediately looked at me.

“You don’t have to tell this.”

But Lily continued.

“He locked kids inside.”

The air disappeared from the room.

“He said it was because we were bad.”

“He said bad kids needed to learn.”

My hands started shaking.

“Did he hurt you?”

Lily didn’t answer.

And somehow…

That silence was the answer.

Daniel turned away.

His jaw tightened.

I saw anger in his eyes.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Anger.

Real anger.

“What happened after Daniel found out?”

I asked.

Daniel answered quietly.

“I confronted him.”

“And?”

“He denied everything.”

“Of course he did.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then I reported him.”

I looked down at the report.

“But he stayed open.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because someone stopped the investigation.”

My heart dropped.

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“The person who signed off on closing the case…”

He paused.

“Was someone with power.”

“Someone who could make evidence disappear.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at the document.

Then said a name.

A name I recognized.

A name that made everything worse.

“Your adoption agency director.”

I froze.

“What?”

Daniel nodded.

“The same person who approved Lily’s placement with us.”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly the entire adoption process felt different.

The interviews.

The paperwork.

The recommendations.

Everything.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m saying Lily wasn’t just placed with us randomly.”

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?”

“She was moved.”

“Hidden.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

“Because someone wanted her away from Michael.”

I felt sick.

“And they chose us?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“They chose you.”

The words hit me harder than I expected.

“Why me?”

Daniel reached for another folder.

One he had hidden behind the old envelope.

“I found this after Lily came here.”

My hands trembled.

“What is it?”

He opened it.

Inside was a letter.

A handwritten letter.

The name at the bottom was Lily’s biological mother.

I looked at Daniel.

“She wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Daniel handed me the paper.

I read the first sentence.

And immediately felt my heart stop.

“Please protect my daughter from the people who are pretending to save her.”

I looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s face turned serious.

“It means Lily’s story didn’t begin with Michael.”

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

Daniel looked at the stairs.

Where Lily was standing.

Listening.

Then he whispered:

“Michael wasn’t the only person she was afraid of.”

A silence filled the room.

Then Lily spoke.

A tiny voice.

Almost impossible to hear.

“There was another man.”

I turned toward her.

“Who?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

She pointed at the photograph.

Not at Daniel.

Not at Michael.

At someone standing behind them.

Someone I hadn’t noticed before.

A shadowy figure near the doorway.

And Lily whispered:

“That man told Michael what to do.”
