Chapter 12 - The House Where The Secret Began

The words echoed in the basement.

“The Carter family house.”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

The secret wasn’t hidden somewhere far away.

It wasn’t buried in another city.

It wasn’t locked inside some forgotten building.

It had been waiting in Daniel’s own family home.

The same place where he grew up.

The same place where Jonathan had lived.

The same place everyone believed was empty.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew about that house.”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

His eyes moved away.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

He slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How many secrets are you still keeping?”

His voice was broken.

“Not anymore.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then at the hidden room.

Then finally at me.

“The Carter family house was where everything started.”

The officer motioned for him to continue.

“What happened there?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“My father built that house thirty years ago.”

“It was supposed to represent success.”

“Family.”

“Respect.”

“But behind those walls…”

He stopped.

“Something else was happening.”

I felt a chill.

“Jonathan?”

Daniel nodded.

“Jonathan controlled everything.”

“Money.”

“People.”

“Information.”

“He knew everyone.”

The officer looked through the files.

“Why would he hide evidence there?”

“Because he believed nobody would ever search it.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because everyone thought the Carter family was untouchable.”

The words made me angry.

Because powerful people always seemed to believe they were above consequences.

“What does Lily remember?”

Daniel looked at her.

She was sitting quietly on the basement steps.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Like she was trying to disappear.

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart.”

“You don’t have to tell us anything you don’t want to.”

She looked up.

“But if I don’t…”

Her voice shook.

“He will hurt someone else.”

My heart broke.

Seven years old.

And she was still thinking about protecting others.

I held her hand.

“You’re brave.”

She shook her head.

“I’m scared.”

I hugged her.

“You can be both.”

After a few minutes, Lily started speaking.

“When I was little…”

“I went to the big house.”

“What big house?”

“The Carter house.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“You were there?”

Lily nodded.

“Michael brought me.”

“Why?”

“He said someone wanted to see me.”

“Who?”

She looked at Daniel.

“Jonathan.”

The room became silent.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

Lily nodded.

“Yes.”

“I remember him.”

I felt my stomach twist.

“Did he hurt you?”

She looked down.

“No.”

“Not me.”

“Then what?”

“He talked.”

“About what?”

Lily squeezed her rabbit.

“He said I was important.”

The officer frowned.

“Important how?”

Lily whispered:

“He said my mommy knew where everything was.”

“Everything?”

She nodded.

“He said she stole something.”

Daniel looked horrified.

“What did he say she stole?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“A book.”

“A black book.”

My heart raced.

A book.

Not files.

Not documents.

Something personal.

Something Jonathan feared.

The officer asked:

“Do you know where the book is?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

“But mommy hid it.”

“Where?”

She hesitated.

Then said:

“Somewhere nobody would look.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel suddenly stood.

His face changed.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel looked terrified.

“The nursery.”

I frowned.

“What nursery?”

“The old nursery at the Carter house.”

The officer asked:

“Why?”

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“Because Rachel used to hide things there.”

I felt a chill.

“Rachel knew the house?”

Daniel nodded.

“She grew up there too.”

The officer immediately started preparing.

“We go there now.”

But Daniel didn’t move.

“Wait.”

“What?”

He looked at me.

“There’s something you need to know.”

I was exhausted from secrets.

But I knew there was more.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Jonathan didn’t disappear because he died.”

My heart stopped.

“Then why?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because my family helped him disappear.”

Silence.

The officer stared.

“Your family covered it up?”

Daniel nodded.

“After Rachel vanished…”

“After the investigation started…”

“My father made a deal.”

“With who?”

Daniel looked toward the files.

“With Jonathan.”

I felt sick.

“What kind of deal?”

Daniel’s voice became a whisper.

“They would protect his identity.”

“In exchange…”

He paused.

“For keeping the evidence hidden.”

The officer asked:

“What evidence?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“The evidence that could put powerful people in prison.”

A sudden noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

The police officers immediately moved.

Someone was inside the house.

But nobody had entered.

The officer checked the cameras.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?”

He turned the monitor toward us.

The security footage showed a person walking through our living room.

A man.

Older.

Calm.

Looking directly at the camera.

Then he turned.

And smiled.

Daniel went completely still.

Because he knew him.

The officer asked:

“Who is that?”

Daniel whispered:

“Jonathan.”

My blood ran cold.

“But you said…”

“I know.”

“You said he was dead.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I was wrong.”

The man on the camera slowly walked toward the basement door.

Toward us.

Then the video froze.

A message appeared on the screen.

Written in black letters.

YOU FOUND THE BOOK.

I looked at Lily.

She looked terrified.

Because she whispered the words nobody wanted to hear.

“He knows where mommy hid it.”

A second message appeared.

NOW I NEED THE GIRL TO REMEMBER.

The basement door handle suddenly moved.

Someone was outside.

Everyone raised their weapons.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

The door opened slowly.

And standing there…

May you like

Was the man who had been dead for twenty years.

Jonathan Carter.
