Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Returned From The Dead

The basement door opened slowly.
Every person in that room raised their weapon.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Because standing on the other side of that door…
Was the man who was supposed to have been dead for twenty years.
Jonathan Carter.
Daniel stared at him.
His face looked like he had seen a ghost.
And maybe he had.
Because the brother standing in front of him was the same man he had buried in his memories.
The same man whose death certificate existed.
The same man everyone believed was gone forever.
But he was alive.
Older.
Different.
Yet somehow more dangerous than before.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Jonathan smiled.
“You look surprised.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“How?”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“How are you alive?”
Jonathan laughed quietly.
“That’s the first question you ask?”
“Not why I’m here?”
“Not why your daughter is afraid of me?”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about her.”
Jonathan looked past him.
His eyes landed on Lily.
The little girl immediately grabbed my hand.
Her body started shaking.
“Stay away from her.”
My voice came out stronger than I expected.
Jonathan looked at me.
Then smiled.
“So this is Emma.”
“The woman who unknowingly became part of the plan.”
My stomach dropped.
“What plan?”
Jonathan ignored me.
He looked at Daniel.
“You really didn’t tell her anything.”
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“You don’t get to judge me.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You always wanted to be the good brother.”
“The hero.”
“But heroes always have secrets.”
The police officer stepped forward.
“Jonathan Carter.”
“You are under investigation for multiple crimes.”
Jonathan didn’t look afraid.
Instead, he smiled.
“That’s interesting.”
“Because everyone who investigated me before…”
“Ended up disappearing.”
The officer’s expression changed.
But he didn’t back down.
“You’re coming with us.”
Jonathan looked around the room.
At the files.
The cameras.
The evidence.
Then he smiled.
“You finally found my collection.”
I felt sick.
“Your collection?”
Jonathan looked at the documents.
“Information is power.”
“People think money controls the world.”
“They’re wrong.”
“Secrets do.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You destroyed children’s lives.”
Jonathan’s expression didn’t change.
“No.”
“I gave people opportunities.”
My anger exploded.
“Opportunities?”
I stepped forward.
“You manipulated children.”
“You destroyed families.”
“You made them afraid.”
Jonathan looked at Lily.
“She was always stronger than the others.”
Lily immediately hid behind me.
“Don’t look at her.”
Jonathan smiled.
“See?”
“She remembers.”
Daniel moved closer.
“What did you do to her?”
Jonathan looked at him.
“I taught her something important.”
“What?”
“That nobody comes to save you.”
The words hit harder than a confession.
Because Lily believed that.
For years.
She believed adults always left.
She believed promises meant nothing.
Daniel’s face changed.
“You’re sick.”
Jonathan smiled.
“And you’re guilty.”
The room became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does he mean?”
Jonathan answered before Daniel could.
“Ask your husband about the night Rachel disappeared.”
Daniel froze.
My heart dropped.
“Rachel?”
Jonathan smiled.
“Yes.”
“The woman who trusted him.”
“The woman who thought he would protect her.”
Daniel’s voice became angry.
“Don’t.”
Jonathan ignored him.
“Tell her what happened.”
Daniel looked away.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel.”
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me.”
Jonathan laughed.
“You see?”
“He still can’t do it.”
“Even now.”
I looked at my husband.
“Tell me the truth.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“I found Rachel that night.”
My heart stopped.
“You found her?”
“Yes.”
“Before she disappeared?”
Daniel nodded.
“She was running.”
“From Jonathan?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Daniel’s breathing became heavy.
“She gave me Lily.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Lily.
“She gave you her?”
Daniel nodded.
“She begged me to protect her.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Rachel made me promise.”
“Promise what?”
“That if anything happened…”
“I would keep Lily away from the Carter family.”
I looked at Jonathan.
Then back at Daniel.
“But you brought her into a house with a Carter.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Exactly.”
“That was the beautiful part.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What?”
Jonathan walked slowly into the room.
“You never knew.”
“None of you did.”
“You thought you were saving Lily.”
“But you were actually bringing her back to where she belonged.”
My blood ran cold.
“What are you talking about?”
Jonathan looked at Lily.
“She isn’t just a witness.”
“She is the key.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“She is a child.”
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
“You still don’t understand.”
“She has something Rachel hid.”
“The only thing that can destroy me.”
The officer raised his weapon.
“Enough.”
Jonathan stopped.
Then slowly reached into his coat.
Everyone reacted.
But he only pulled out a small object.
A flash drive.
He held it up.
“This is what everyone has been searching for.”
The room became silent.
“The evidence?”
Jonathan nodded.
“The truth.”
Daniel stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Jonathan smiled.
“From the person who was supposed to protect it.”
My heart tightened.
“Who?”
Jonathan looked directly at me.
And said:
“Your husband.”
The room exploded with silence.
I turned toward Daniel.
“No.”
Daniel looked horrified.
“That’s a lie.”
Jonathan laughed.
“Is it?”
“Then tell her where the flash drive was hidden.”
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence destroyed me.
Because maybe…
Just maybe…
Jonathan wasn’t lying.
I looked at my husband.
“Daniel.”
“Where is the flash drive?”
He looked at me.
His eyes filled with regret.
Then he whispered:
“I had it.”
My heart broke.
“You had it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked toward Lily.
“Because Rachel gave it to me.”
“And because if Jonathan found it…”
He stopped.
“What?”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“He would kill Lily.”
Everyone froze.
Jonathan smiled.
Because he knew.
He knew Daniel had finally admitted the truth.
Then Lily suddenly screamed.
“No!”
Everyone turned.
She was staring at the flash drive.
Her face was filled with terror.
“Lily?”
She pointed at it.
“That’s not the one.”
Jonathan’s smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
Lily stepped backward.
“That’s not the real one.”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Lily looked at Jonathan.
Then whispered:
“Mommy knew he would find it.”
“She made a fake one.”
Jonathan’s face changed.
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
Because a seven-year-old child had just revealed something he didn’t know.
Lily looked at Daniel.
“She hid the real one where nobody would search.”
Everyone waited.
“Where?”
Lily’s eyes moved slowly toward Jonathan.
Then she said:
“Inside the place where you said nobody would ever look.”
Jonathan froze.
Because he knew exactly what she meant.
The Carter family house.
But not the nursery.
Somewhere else.
May you like
Somewhere much closer.
Somewhere hidden for twenty years.
