Chapter 8 - The Secret Daniel Was Forced To Hide

The accusation hung in the air.

Heavy.

Impossible.

The voice on the phone had planted one terrible idea in my mind.

A question I never wanted to ask.

Was Daniel hiding something?

Or worse…

Was Daniel part of the reason Lily was suffering?

I hated myself for even thinking it.

Because Daniel was the man who held my hand through years of disappointment.

The man who cried when we finally received approval to adopt.

The man who promised me we would give a child a safe home.

But then I looked at Lily’s empty bedroom.

And remembered her terrified face when he touched his belt.

Fear does not appear from nowhere.

Children don’t react like that without a reason.

The police officer looked directly at Daniel.

“Mr. Carter, I need you to answer something.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“What?”

“Has your brother ever accused you of being involved?”

Daniel’s face changed.

A small reaction.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because Michael knew how to manipulate people.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Daniel stayed quiet.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Carter.”

“If there is anything that connects you to this case…”

“You need to tell us now.”

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of being exposed.

Fear of losing us.

“I need to tell you everything.”

I crossed my arms.

“Finally.”

Daniel sat down.

His voice was quiet.

“When I discovered what Michael was doing, I didn’t just report him.”

“I went after him.”

The room became silent.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel looked at his hands.

“I investigated him.”

“Without permission.”

“Without telling anyone.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew the system was protecting him.”

The officer nodded.

“Continue.”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“I found financial records.”

“Payments.”

“Transfers.”

“Names.”

“People who were connected.”

I stared at him.

“And Richard Hale?”

“He was one of them.”

“Who else?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation returned.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“My father.”

The room went completely silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Your father?”

Daniel nodded.

“My father knew Richard.”

“How?”

“They worked together.”

“Doing what?”

Daniel looked away.

“Investments.”

“Charities.”

“Organizations that supported children.”

My stomach turned.

Because suddenly everything became darker.

The people who claimed to protect children…

Were the ones hiding behind them.

“Your family was involved?”

Daniel shook his head quickly.

“Not everyone.”

“But my father was.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”

“Because my father died before we met.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It does.”

“Why?”

“Because after he died…”

Daniel paused.

“Everything disappeared.”

The officer frowned.

“Documents?”

“Evidence?”

“Everything.”

“Who took it?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

I almost couldn’t believe him anymore.

You don’t know.

You didn’t know.

You didn’t tell me.

Those words kept repeating in my mind.

Then something happened.

Something small.

But it changed everything.

My phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One picture.

My hands immediately went cold.

It was Lily.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Her eyes were red from crying.

But she was looking directly at the camera.

Below the picture was one sentence.

SHE REMEMBERS WHAT YOU FORGOT.

I showed Daniel.

His face changed.

“What?”

The officer looked.

“Can you identify the location?”

Daniel stared at the picture.

Then suddenly stood.

“Yes.”

Everyone looked at him.

“You know where she is?”

Daniel pointed at the background.

A small detail.

A broken window.

A wooden wall.

A faded blue mark.

“That’s Michael’s old storage building.”

The officer immediately asked:

“Where?”

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“I’m coming with you.”

The officer stopped him.

“No.”

“You’re a potential witness.”

“I’m her father.”

“You’re also connected to the people involved.”

Daniel looked furious.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew the officer was right.

I stepped forward.

“I’m going.”

The officer looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter—”

“She’s my daughter.”

No one argued.

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the abandoned building.

It was hidden behind an old warehouse.

Forgotten.

Broken.

The type of place nobody would notice.

Daniel stood outside.

His face was pale.

“I was here before.”

I looked at him.

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

My heart sank.

“You brought Lily here?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I came after.”

“To find evidence.”

“And?”

Daniel looked at the building.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A room.”

The officer prepared his team.

“What kind of room?”

Daniel’s voice became low.

“The room where Michael kept everything.”

The door was forced open.

Inside, there was almost nothing.

Dust.

Old boxes.

Broken furniture.

Then one officer called out.

“Over here.”

Everyone rushed forward.

Behind a false wall…

Was a hidden storage area.

Inside were files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Children.

My heart broke as I saw the evidence.

Years of secrets.

Years of lies.

Then Daniel picked up one file.

His face changed.

“What?”

I looked at him.

He turned the folder around.

The name on it made my blood freeze.

Because it wasn’t Lily.

It wasn’t another child.

It was me.

My name.

My adoption records.

My personal information.

I stepped backward.

“What is that?”

Daniel opened the folder slowly.

Inside was a photograph of me.

Taken years before I ever met him.

And underneath it…

A handwritten note.

“The mother will be useful.”

My entire body went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?”

He didn’t answer.

Because another sound came from the back of the building.

A small voice.

A voice I would recognize anywhere.

“Mom?”

I turned around.

“Lily!”

I ran.

But before I reached her…

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

Holding Lily’s hand.

May you like

And the person standing there…

Was the last person I expected to see.
