Chapter 5 - The Man Standing Outside Our Door

The knocking stopped.

But the fear it left behind stayed.

Three slow knocks.

Three quiet reminders that someone was outside our home.

Someone who knew where we lived.

Someone who knew Lily was here.

Daniel stood frozen near the hallway.

His eyes were locked on the front door.

I had never seen him like that before.

Not even when we discovered the truth about Michael.

This was different.

This wasn’t confusion.

This wasn’t shock.

This was recognition.

“Daniel…”

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel always had an answer.

Always.

Except now.

Lily grabbed my hand.

Her fingers were shaking.

“Don’t open it.”

I looked down at her.

“Sweetheart…”

“Don’t open it.”

Her voice became louder.

“He wants you to open it.”

A chill went through my body.

Daniel slowly walked toward the door.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I need to know who it is.”

“What if it’s him?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Then I need to see him.”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to make decisions alone anymore.”

Those words hurt him.

But they were true.

For years, Daniel had carried secrets because he believed he was protecting people.

But secrets had consequences.

Especially when a child was involved.

He looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

Finally, he stepped away from the door.

The knocking didn’t come again.

For almost a full minute, nobody moved.

Then Daniel picked up his phone.

“I’m calling the police.”

Before he could dial…

The doorbell rang.

A different sound.

Calmer.

Almost polite.

And somehow…

That made it worse.

Because whoever was outside wasn’t angry.

They were confident.

Daniel looked through the small window beside the door.

His face changed instantly.

“What?”

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.”

His hand tightened.

“It’s Richard.”

My stomach dropped.

Lily immediately hid behind me.

“No.”

She whispered.

“No, no, no.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“How does he know where we live?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

And that scared me.

The doorbell rang again.

Then a voice came from outside.

A calm male voice.

“Daniel.”

“Open the door.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard knew his name.

Of course he did.

“Daniel, we need to talk.”

I looked at my husband.

“Why does he sound like he belongs here?”

Daniel whispered:

“Because Richard has always believed he owns every room he enters.”

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

Those twelve minutes felt like hours.

Richard never left.

He stood outside.

Waiting.

Like he knew nothing could touch him.

When the officers approached him, he didn’t run.

He didn’t panic.

He simply smiled.

That smile made my skin crawl.

The officer spoke to him.

Then walked toward our door.

“Mr. Carter?”

Daniel opened the door slightly.

“Yes.”

“Do you know this man?”

Daniel stared at Richard.

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“Old family friend.”

The words were smooth.

Almost believable.

The officer looked confused.

“Is there a problem?”

Before Daniel could answer, Richard spoke.

“I heard Daniel found the little girl.”

The air changed.

The officer looked at him.

“What girl?”

Richard smiled.

“The adopted daughter.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about her.”

Richard looked past him.

Toward the house.

Toward Lily.

Even though he couldn’t see her.

“She was always a difficult child.”

My entire body went cold.

Lily started shaking.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Leave.”

Richard laughed softly.

“You still play the hero.”

“You always did.”

Daniel stepped outside.

“You’re done.”

Richard tilted his head.

“Am I?”

Then he leaned closer.

“You never learned, Daniel.”

“People like us don’t lose.”

The officer stepped between them.

“Sir, you need to leave the property.”

Richard smiled.

Then looked directly at me.

Not Daniel.

Me.

That terrified me.

“Mrs. Carter.”

I froze.

How did he know my name?

“You should ask your husband what really happened six years ago.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

The officer noticed.

“Is there something else I need to know?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew there was.

Richard finally walked away.

But before he reached his car, he stopped.

He turned around.

And said something that I would remember forever.

“Lily was never the only child.”

Then he left.

The street became silent.

But inside our house…

Everything fell apart.

I turned toward Daniel.

“What did he mean?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

“What did he mean, Daniel?”

He looked exhausted.

“I don’t know.”

I stared at him.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Daniel looked at the stairs.

At Lily.

Then whispered:

“There were other children.”

My heart sank.

“Where are they?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

The next morning, I woke up to find Lily missing.

Her bedroom door was open.

Her bed was empty.

The window was slightly open.

And sitting on her pillow…

Was the old photograph.

With a new note written on the back.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

There were only six words.

Six words that made my blood run cold.

“Ask Daniel where the others went.”

I turned around.

Daniel was standing in the doorway.

His face had lost all color.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

May you like

And this time…

He couldn’t hide it anymore.
