Chapter 6 - The Children Who Were Never Found

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was reading.

The note was short.

Too short.

Only six words.

But those six words felt heavier than an entire confession.

Ask Daniel where the others went.

My hands started shaking.

I looked at my husband standing in the doorway.

He wasn’t surprised.

He wasn’t confused.

He looked terrified.

And that was the moment I knew.

There was still something he hadn’t told me.

“Where is Lily?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence broke something inside me.

“Daniel.”

My voice became louder.

“Where is my daughter?”

He walked toward the room.

“She couldn’t have gone far.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“She’s scared.”

“No.”

I looked at the note again.

“She was taken.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You don’t know that.”

“Then explain why someone left this.”

He looked at the paper.

And his expression became darker.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

“You know who wrote this.”

It wasn’t a question.

It was an accusation.

Daniel slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He swallowed.

“Richard.”

My heart dropped.

“He took her?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

I could barely control my anger.

“My seven-year-old daughter is missing, and you’re telling me you don’t know?”

Daniel ran his hand through his hair.

“I need to think.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You’ve had six years to think.”

“You’ve had six years to keep secrets.”

“But I’m done waiting.”

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling the police.”

Daniel didn’t stop me.

And somehow, that scared me even more.

The police arrived within minutes.

The house that once felt like a home suddenly felt like a crime scene.

Officers searched Lily’s room.

They checked the backyard.

They looked through security footage.

Then one officer came back with a serious expression.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“There is something you need to see.”

He showed me the camera footage.

The video was from the side of the house.

The time stamp showed 2:13 in the morning.

A figure appeared near the fence.

My breath stopped.

A person wearing a dark jacket.

Walking carefully.

Heading toward Lily’s window.

Then the figure looked directly at the camera.

Even though the image was blurry…

I knew.

Richard.

“He knew where the cameras were.”

The officer looked at Daniel.

“Do you know this man?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered:

“Someone who should have been arrested years ago.”

The officer stared at him.

“Then I need the full story.”

Daniel looked at me.

For once…

He didn’t try to protect me from the truth.

He sat down.

And finally told everything.

Six years earlier, after reporting Michael’s foster home, Daniel discovered something disturbing.

Michael wasn’t working alone.

There were people helping him.

People with influence.

People who could erase paperwork.

Change records.

Make complaints disappear.

And Richard Hale was one of them.

“He controlled the money.”

Daniel said.

“He controlled the connections.”

“He made sure Michael looked untouchable.”

The officer frowned.

“Why?”

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re telling me you spent years investigating and never found a motive?”

“I found pieces.”

“But not the whole picture.”

I crossed my arms.

“And the children?”

Daniel became quiet.

The room went silent.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“What children?”

His voice was barely audible.

“The ones who disappeared.”

My stomach twisted.

“How many?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Four.”

The number hit me like a punch.

Four children.

Four lives.

Four families.

“And Lily?”

“She was supposed to disappear too.”

The officer immediately leaned forward.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“After I reported Michael, he became nervous.”

“He knew someone might expose him.”

“So he started moving children.”

“Moving them where?”

“I don’t know.”

The officer stared.

“You’re telling me children were relocated and nobody tracked them?”

Daniel nodded.

“That’s exactly what happened.”

I felt sick.

“How could nobody notice?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because everyone who should have protected them trusted the wrong people.”

The officer wrote something down.

Then looked at Daniel.

“You said Lily was supposed to disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she?”

Daniel’s face changed.

Because that answer was painful.

“Because her biological mother found out.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel nodded.

“She discovered what was happening.”

“She tried to expose them.”

“What happened to her?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

The officer did.

“Mr. Carter?”

Daniel finally whispered:

“She died.”

The room went silent.

I felt a chill.

“Died how?”

Daniel looked at me.

“They called it an accident.”

“But you don’t believe that.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because before she died…”

He stopped.

“What?”

Daniel looked toward Lily’s empty room.

“She sent me something.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

“The one you showed me?”

Daniel nodded.

“But there was more.”

My anger returned.

“What more?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

I stared at it.

“You had that the entire time?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Of what would happen if the truth came out.”

I took the envelope.

My hands were trembling.

Inside was a second letter.

Different from the first.

The handwriting was weaker.

Like the person writing it was running out of time.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“Daniel, if you are reading this, they already know Lily survived.”

I looked at my husband.

Then continued reading.

“Do not trust the people who come pretending to help.”

My breathing became faster.

Because I knew what was coming.

The final sentence was written darker.

Like someone pressed the pen harder.

“The person who controls everything is not Michael.”

I looked at Daniel.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

I read the last line.

And my entire body went cold.

“It is someone inside your own family.”

I slowly lowered the letter.

Daniel was staring at me.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

Only one sound came through.

A child crying.

“Lily?”

The crying stopped.

Then a man whispered:

“You wanted the truth.”

A pause.

Then:

“Come find your daughter.”

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like he already knew who it was.

And when he finally spoke…

His words terrified me.

May you like

“Emma…”

“That wasn’t Richard.”
