Chapter 4 - The Face Hidden In The Photograph

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the person Lily pointed at in the photograph was someone I hadn’t noticed before.

A man standing in the background.

Half hidden by the doorway.

His face was blurry.

But Lily remembered him.

And that terrified me.

Because children forget many things.

They forget birthdays.

They forget toys.

They forget small details from ordinary days.

But they don’t forget the face of someone who made them afraid.

I took the photograph from Lily’s hands.

“Sweetheart…”

I tried to keep my voice calm.

“Do you know who this man is?”

Lily nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?”

Lily looked at him.

Her eyes filled with fear.

“He came with Michael.”

The room became silent again.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Like he already suspected the answer.

“Did he hurt you?”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Then she whispered:

“He made Michael angry.”

I frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Lily looked down.

“He told Michael what to do.”

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Daniel.

“Do you know who he is?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

Because every time Daniel hesitated…

It meant there was something he wasn’t telling me.

“Daniel.”

His eyes moved to the photograph.

Then away.

“I might know.”

“Might?”

He sighed.

“I haven’t seen him in years.”

“Who is he?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then quietly said:

“Richard Hale.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel’s reaction told me everything.

This man mattered.

“Who is Richard Hale?”

Daniel sat down.

“He was involved with my brother’s foster home.”

“Involved how?”

“He helped Michael get funding.”

“He helped him pass inspections.”

“He knew people inside the system.”

I felt a cold wave move through my body.

“So he helped cover everything.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at Lily.

Seven years old.

Standing in our living room.

Holding memories no child should have.

“How did you know all this and say nothing?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because I was trying to find proof.”

“Proof?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel, our daughter was living with someone dangerous.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

My voice broke.

“She was a child.”

“She was waiting for someone to save her.”

Daniel looked down.

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

That question hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed an answer.

“I tried.”

His voice became quiet.

“I tried more than once.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Daniel leaned back.

And started telling me the part of the story he had kept hidden.

Six years earlier, Daniel had received a strange phone call.

It was from a former social worker.

A woman who had worked with Michael’s foster home.

She sounded terrified.

“She told me something was wrong.”

Daniel said.

“She said children were disappearing from records.”

“Records?”

“Yes.”

“Placements were being changed.”

“Reports were being rewritten.”

“Complaints were disappearing.”

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t she go to the police?”

“She tried.”

“And?”

“She lost her job two weeks later.”

The room felt smaller.

Daniel continued.

“That’s when I started looking into Michael.”

“What did you find?”

His hands tightened.

“Enough to know children were not safe.”

“And Lily?”

“I didn’t know Lily existed.”

“Not until?”

“Not until I went to Michael’s house.”

The words stopped me.

“You went there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew he was hiding something.”

Daniel looked at Lily.

“I saw her.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“You saw me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Daniel’s face showed pain.

“You were sitting on the floor.”

“In that locked room.”

Lily hugged herself.

“You remember?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

I felt tears forming.

“Why didn’t you take her?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because Michael wasn’t alone.”

I waited.

“Richard was there.”

The name made the room colder.

“They threatened me.”

“Threatened you with what?”

Daniel looked at me.

“They said if I tried to remove Lily, they would destroy my life.”

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel looked at me.

“No.”

“It wasn’t.”

“They had connections.”

“They had money.”

“They had people willing to protect them.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The hidden man in the doorway.

Richard Hale.

“What happened that day?”

Daniel’s voice became lower.

“I called authorities.”

“And?”

“They arrived.”

“Then why was Lily left there?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because Michael had prepared for it.”

“What do you mean?”

“He had paperwork.”

“Records.”

“Witnesses.”

“Everything looked perfect.”

I couldn’t believe it.

“So they believed him?”

“Yes.”

“And they didn’t believe you?”

Daniel nodded.

“They thought I was just a jealous brother trying to ruin his family.”

The anger inside me grew.

“But you knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you did nothing?”

Daniel looked at me.

“I spent six years trying.”

The words hung in the air.

Six years.

Six years of secrets.

Six years of searching.

Six years while Lily carried fear alone.

Then suddenly…

Lily spoke.

“He came back.”

My blood ran cold.

Everyone turned toward her.

“Who came back?”

She pointed toward the window.

Her face had lost all color.

“Richard.”

Daniel immediately stood.

“What?”

Lily stepped closer to me.

“He was outside our house.”

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“When?”

“Last night.”

Daniel looked shocked.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Lily started crying.

“Because he said…”

She stopped.

I knelt beside her.

“What did he say?”

Her voice trembled.

“He said…”

“He said Daniel failed before.”

“And this time…”

“He wouldn’t let him save me.”

The lights suddenly flickered.

Daniel turned toward the front door.

Then I heard it.

A sound.

A slow knock.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Because whoever was standing outside…

Wasn’t a stranger.

May you like

They knew exactly where we lived.

And they wanted us to know they were there.
