Chapter 7 - THE FILE I NEVER WANTED TO OPEN

The question stayed between us.

“What happened fifteen years ago?”

I looked at my daughter.

The same eyes she had when she was a little girl.

The same eyes that used to look at me like I could fix anything.

But now…

She was looking at me like a stranger.

And I couldn’t blame her.

“Dad?”

I walked to the table and placed the black folder down.

“I need you to understand something.”

Lily crossed her arms.

“I’m listening.”

“I didn’t leave my old life because I wanted to.”

She said nothing.

“I left because someone betrayed me.”

Her expression changed.

“Who?”

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents I had kept hidden for fifteen years.

Reports.

Photographs.

Names.

Richard Harrington was not the first dangerous man I had faced.

He was just the first one who hurt my daughter.

“I was part of a federal investigation.”

Lily looked at the pages.

“What kind of investigation?”

“One involving powerful people.”

“Like Richard?”

I nodded.

“People who believed money could erase anything.”

She looked at the photos.

Then she stopped.

Her face changed.

“Wait.”

She picked up one page.

“Dad…”

Her voice became quiet.

“This name.”

I looked.

My heart stopped.

Richard Harrington.

Not as a suspect.

As a witness.

Lily stared at me.

“You knew his family?”

“No.”

“But his name is here.”

I grabbed the document.

Fifteen years ago, Richard’s father had been connected to an operation I investigated.

But Richard himself…

He was never supposed to be involved.

Until now.

“Your husband’s family has been hiding something for a long time.”

Lily looked away.

“I should have known.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“I ignored every warning.”

I sat beside her.

“You trusted someone.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“That’s what he used against me.”

I didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

People like Richard didn’t break people with one big action.

They did it slowly.

A comment.

A threat.

An apology.

Then another betrayal.

My phone suddenly rang.

A secure line.

The number only belonged to one person.

I answered.

“Walker.”

The voice on the other end was older.

But familiar.

“Never thought I’d hear from you again.”

I looked at Lily.

“Neither did I.”

The voice became serious.

“You activated the emergency channel.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked at my daughter.

“Because someone came after my family.”

A pause.

Then:

“Is the person Richard Harrington?”

My entire body went still.

“How do you know that name?”

Silence.

Then the answer came.

“Because he has been looking for you for fifteen years.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“You thought you disappeared.”

The voice lowered.

“But Richard’s family never stopped searching.”

I looked at Lily.

Everything suddenly connected.

The marriage.

The estate.

The control.

It wasn’t random.

Richard didn’t just hurt my daughter.

He chose her.

“Why?”

The voice answered:

“Because Lily Walker was the last piece of evidence they needed.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Lily looked terrified.

“What did he mean?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I finally understood.

Richard didn’t marry my daughter by accident.

May you like

He married her because of me.
