Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO WAITED FIFTEEN YEARS

The warehouse looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusty doors.
No lights.
Exactly the kind of place someone chose when they wanted control.
Lily sat in the car.
“I’m coming with you.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Dad.”
“Lily.”
Her voice became firm.
“I spent my entire marriage being told I was weak.”
She opened the door.
“I’m not letting someone else decide what I can do anymore.”
I stared at my daughter.
And I realized something.
The girl I protected was gone.
She had become a woman who could stand beside me.
“Stay close.”
She nodded.
We entered together.
Inside…
A single light turned on.
A man stood in the center of the room.
Older.
Gray hair.
Calm smile.
Michael Voss.
After fifteen years.
Finally.
“Hello, Walker.”
I stared at him.
“You look older.”
He smiled.
“You look tired.”
“I am.”
“Because of me?”
I looked at Lily.
“Because of what people like you do.”
Voss laughed.
“Still the hero.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“Just a father.”
His smile faded.
“Do you know why I waited?”
“No.”
“Because I knew you would come back.”
I said nothing.
“You had one weakness.”
He looked at Lily.
“Her.”
My anger rose.
But I controlled it.
“You used my daughter.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Your daughter saved you.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Voss walked toward a table.
On it was an old file.
The same file I thought disappeared fifteen years ago.
“You were never investigating us.”
I looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
“You were protecting something.”
He opened the file.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
My old team.
And a document.
Lily looked at it.
“Dad…”
I picked it up.
My blood went cold.
Because the truth was finally there.
The reason everything happened.
The reason Richard married Lily.
The reason Voss came back.
The document had one name.
Mine.
And beneath it…
A secret I had never known.
Voss smiled.
“Your father hid the truth from you.”
I looked at him.
“What truth?”
He leaned closer.
“The truth about who you really are.”
The lights suddenly went out.
A loud crash came from behind us.
When emergency lights turned back on…
Voss was gone.
And the file…
Was missing.
Except for one page left on the floor.
A page with a sentence written in black ink.

YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER THE TARGET.
YOU WERE.
