Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH MY FATHER BURIED

For fifteen years, I believed I was running away from my past.
I was wrong.
My past had been running toward me.
I stood inside the abandoned warehouse, staring at the empty space where Michael Voss had disappeared.
Lily picked up the single page left behind.
Her hands were shaking.
“Dad…”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She turned the paper around.
“Read this.”
I took it.
The words were simple.
But they felt heavier than anything I had ever carried.
YOUR DAUGHTER WAS NEVER THE TARGET.
YOU WERE.
I stared at the sentence.
My entire life had been built around protecting Lily.
But what if I had misunderstood everything?
What if every attack…
Every threat…
Every person who came after us…
Was never about her?
It was about me.
“Dad?”
I looked at Lily.
“I need to tell you something.”
She waited.
“My father knew this would happen.”
Her eyebrows tightened.
“Your father?”
I nodded.
“Before he died, he left warnings.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Because I didn’t know the truth.
Because I spent my whole life believing my father was just a quiet man.
But maybe he had secrets too.
We returned home with the remaining evidence we had.
Thomas helped us search through old records.
Hours passed.
Then he found something.
“Walker.”
I looked up.
“What?”
He placed an old photograph on the table.
It was my father.
Standing beside a group of people.
One of them was Michael Voss.
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily looked confused.
“Dad?”
I picked up the photo.
“My father knew him.”
“Then why hide it?”
I didn’t know.
Until Thomas opened another file.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
I read it slowly.
“Ethan,
If you are reading this, then they found you.
I failed to protect you from the truth.
Your mother and I discovered what Voss was building.
A network of powerful people who believed they were above the law.
We collected evidence.
But we couldn’t expose them without someone surviving.
So I hid the evidence where nobody would look.
With you.
Your entire life has been the hiding place.”
I stopped reading.
Lily stared.
“What does that mean?”
I looked at Thomas.
Then the answer hit me.
“The evidence.”
Thomas nodded.
“Your father didn’t hide it somewhere.”
He looked at me.
“He hid it in your memories.”
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed at the letter.
“Your father knew someone would try to take it. So he made sure nobody could find it unless you remembered.”
I closed my eyes.
Suddenly, pieces of my childhood came back.
The locked drawer.
The strange conversations.
The old house.
My father always telling me:
“Some things are safer inside your heart than inside a safe.”
I thought it was just something old men said.
I was wrong.
Lily touched my arm.
“Dad.”
I looked at her.
“We need to find it.”
I nodded.
But before we could move…
The power went out.
Again.
The same darkness.
The same silence.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Walker.”
My blood froze.
Richard.
I moved toward the window.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him…
Was David Harrington.
The man who was supposed to be arrested.
The man who should have been gone.
Lily whispered:
“How?”
I stared at them.
Because I finally understood.
The enemy was never one person.
It was an entire system.
May you like
And they were all coming for us.
