Chapter 5 - THE SECRET MY DAUGHTER NEVER KNEW

We stayed hidden until nightfall.

Sarah sat across from me in an old diner outside town.

She kept looking at me.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was confused.

“You’re not just a father.”

I looked at my coffee.

“I am.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I saw how you moved.”

Silence.

“You knew those men were coming before they arrived.”

I said nothing.

“You’re trained.”

I looked out the window.

“Everyone has a past.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“But yours is chasing you.”

That was the problem.

The past always finds a way back.

I opened the black folder.

Inside were documents.

Names.

Operations.

Photographs.

A life I had erased.

Sarah stared.

“Who were you?”

I closed the folder.

“Someone who made enemies.”

“Richard knows?”

“No.”

“Then why is he afraid?”

I looked at her.

“Because someone told him.”

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED RETIRED.

I stared at the screen.

Sarah saw my expression.

“Who sent that?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

Someone from my old life.

Someone who knew exactly who I was.

Then another message arrived.

A picture.

My daughter leaving the hospital.

My blood turned cold.

They were watching Lily.

I stood immediately.

“We’re leaving.”

Sarah looked alarmed.

“What happened?”

“They found her.”

When I arrived at Lily’s apartment, she was standing by the window.

She looked surprised.

“Dad?”

I walked inside.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded.

Then she saw my face.

“What’s wrong?”

I hesitated.

Because I had spent years protecting Lily by hiding the truth.

But maybe hiding was what put her in danger.

“Lily…”

She waited.

“There are things about me you don’t know.”

A confused expression crossed her face.

“What things?”

I looked at her.

“Things I should have told you a long time ago.”

She sat down.

“Dad, what are you talking about?”

I took a breath.

“Your father wasn’t always just a mechanic living alone.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Before I could answer…

The lights went out.

Every light.

The entire building went dark.

Lily grabbed my arm.

“Dad?”

Then we heard it.

A sound from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone was coming.

I moved in front of her.

“Stay behind me.”

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Then someone whispered:

“Agent Walker…”

My daughter looked at me.

Her face changed.

Because she had never heard that name before.

The door handle started turning.

And Lily finally realized…

May you like

Her father had secrets.
