Chapter 3 - THE MAN THEY NEVER KNEW

By sunrise, Richard Harrington learned something important.

I was not the old man he thought I was.

But he learned it too late.

The first thing he did was call me.

I answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

His voice was different.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Just anger.

“You think you won?”

I looked out my window.

“No.”

A pause.

“I think you’re scared.”

Richard laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

I smiled slightly.

“Funny.”

“What?”

“That’s exactly what you told me yesterday.”

Silence.

Then he whispered.

“Who are you?”

I looked at the black folder on my table.

A name.

A history.

A life I buried.

“You should have asked that before you hurt Lily.”

He hung up.

But I knew something.

Richard wasn’t going to stop.

People like him never stopped when they were exposed.

They attacked harder.

And I was ready.

By noon, my phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Mr. Walker?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t know me.”

“Who are you?”

“My name is Sarah Bennett.”

I frowned.

“I was at the Harrington estate yesterday.”

My grip tightened.

“What did you see?”

Her voice shook.

“Everything.”

I stood up.

“Tell me.”

“I saw Richard arguing with Lily before the party started.”

My heart changed.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“Because nobody listens to people like me.”

“Why call now?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because Richard found out I saw.”

I looked around.

“What happened?”

“He came to my house last night.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did he say?”

“He said accidents happen.”

I closed my eyes.

Richard wasn’t just protecting himself.

He was cleaning up.

“Where are you now?”

“I’m hiding.”

“Send me your location.”

“Why?”

I looked at the folder beside me.

Because the man who hurt my daughter had no idea what he had awakened.

“Because you’re not the only person he underestimated.”

A few seconds later, my phone received the location.

I grabbed my keys.

But before leaving, I looked once more at the black case.

The phone.

The folder.

The past.

Everything I tried to forget.

Then I whispered:

“Sorry, Lily.”

Because protecting her meant becoming someone I promised never to be again.

And somewhere across town…

Richard Harrington was making the biggest mistake of his life.

He was coming after my family.

May you like

And now…

I was coming after his.
