Chapter 14 - THE LAST MOVE

Richard walked into my house like he still owned it.
Like nothing happened.
Like he hadn’t destroyed my daughter’s life.
Lily stepped forward.
“You should not be here.”
Richard looked at her.
For the first time…
He looked nervous.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Nervous.
“I didn’t come to hurt you.”
Lily laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?”
Richard looked down.
“I know what I did.”
The room went quiet.
I watched him carefully.
People like Richard didn’t apologize unless they needed something.
“What do you want?”
Richard looked at me.
“Protection.”
I almost laughed.
“You’re asking me?”
“Yes.”
“After everything?”
He swallowed.
“Because Voss is going to kill all of us.”
Silence.
Even David looked uncomfortable.
That was when I realized.
Richard wasn’t the leader.
He was a piece on the board.
A piece that finally understood he could be sacrificed.
“What did Voss do?”
Richard looked at Lily.
“He lied to everyone.”
“Explain.”
Richard took a breath.
“His plan was never about exposing you.”
He looked at me.
“It was about taking the evidence and destroying anyone connected to it.”
I stared.
“Why?”
“Because that evidence can bring down powerful people.”
“Who?”
Richard hesitated.
Then said:
“The people who built this entire town.”
The same town that protected him.
The same people who looked away.
I looked at Lily.
She understood too.
This wasn’t just about one abusive husband.
It was about every person who believed money could erase the truth.
Then David spoke.
“You still don’t understand.”
I turned.
“What?”
He looked older.
Tired.
“Voss doesn’t want the evidence.”
“Then what does he want?”
David looked at me.
“He wants you to reveal where you hid it.”
I felt something change.
Because I finally understood.
All these years.
All these attacks.
They never needed the evidence.
They needed me to remember.
And now…
They were running out of time.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Voss.
“Hello, Walker.”
My grip tightened.
“What do you want?”
“I want what your father took.”
“It’s over.”
He laughed.
“No.”
A pause.
“It ends when I decide.”
I looked at Lily.
Then at Richard.
Then at David.
Everyone who had spent years believing they controlled the game.
They were wrong.
Because they forgot one thing.
A father has nothing left to lose when someone threatens his child.
Voss continued.
“Bring me the evidence.”
“No.”
“Then your daughter disappears.”
The room went silent.
Lily looked at me.
I didn’t panic.
I didn’t react.
I simply answered:
“You made the same mistake Richard made.”
“What mistake?”
“You thought my daughter was weak.”
The call ended.
Seconds later…
Every screen in the room turned on.
A video appeared.
Lily gasped.
It was a live feed.
From outside.
Someone was watching us.
Then a message appeared:
COME ALONE.
I looked at Lily.
She immediately shook her head.
“No.”
I smiled.
Because for the first time…
She knew exactly what I was thinking.
“You’re not going alone.”
I looked at my daughter.
“No.”
I grabbed my jacket.
“I’m not.”
And then I walked toward the door.
Because this time…
I wasn’t fighting for revenge.
May you like
I was fighting for the future.
