Chapter 11 - THE HIDDEN ENEMY

I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I knew someone wanted me to be afraid.
And fear was exactly how people like them controlled others.
At 3:00 a.m., I walked through the house checking every window and door.
Then I saw something.
A small envelope.
Sitting on my kitchen table.
I knew it wasn’t there before.
Inside was one piece of paper.
A name.
MICHAEL VOSS.
I stared at it.
A name I hadn’t heard in fifteen years.
But one I would never forget.
Michael Voss.
The man behind the operation I investigated.
The man everyone thought disappeared.
The man who destroyed my old life.
I grabbed my phone.
The secure line connected.
“Walker.”
“I need information.”
A pause.
“You know the rules.”
“I’m done following rules.”
Another pause.
Then:
“What happened?”
I looked at Lily sleeping in the next room.
“Voss is back.”
Silence.
Long silence.
Then the voice answered:
“That’s impossible.”
I laughed quietly.
“Fifteen years ago, so was Richard Harrington.”
The line went quiet.
“Walker…”
“What?”
“If Voss is involved, this is bigger than Lily.”
I knew.
But I didn’t care.
Because everything started with my daughter.
And it would end with her safe.
The next morning, I told Lily.
She listened quietly.
Then asked:
“What are we going to do?”
I looked at her.
Not what will I do.
What will we do.
That mattered.
“We find the truth.”
She nodded.
For the first time, I saw something different in her.
Strength.
The same strength her mother had.
Later that day, Thomas Reed arrived.
He carried another old file.
“I found something.”
I opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Harrington companies.
Unknown payments.
Secret accounts.
Then I saw it.
A connection.
Richard’s company had been moving money to another organization.
A company that didn’t officially exist.
I looked at Thomas.
“Who owns this?”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Michael Voss.”
Lily looked confused.
“Who is he?”
I closed the file.
“Someone who destroyed many lives.”
Thomas looked at me.
“And someone who thinks you still have something he wants.”
Before I could answer…
Every phone in the room received the same message.
Mine.
Lily’s.
Thomas’s.
One sentence.
COME FIND ME.
Attached was an address.
An abandoned warehouse outside town.
Lily looked at me.
“Dad, this is a trap.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why go?”
I looked at her.
“Because sometimes…”
I picked up my jacket.
“To end a nightmare, you have to walk into the darkness.”
And this time…
May you like
I wasn’t walking alone.
