Chapter 2 - THE VIDEO UNDER THE COUCH

Richard moved first.
Not toward Lily.
Not toward me.
Toward the phone.
I stepped in front of him.
“No.”
His eyes narrowed.
“Get out of my way.”
“This belongs to my daughter.”
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
I picked up the phone.
The recording was still running.
A small red dot blinked on the screen.
Recording.
Richard stared at it.
And I knew.
The truth was inside that phone.
“Dad…”
Lily’s voice was weak.
I turned around.
“I’m taking you out of here.”
Richard laughed.
“You think you can just leave?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
He stepped closer.
“You really don’t understand.”
“No.”
I held Lily’s hand.
“I understand exactly.”
Richard leaned in.
“My family has owned this town for three generations.”
I said nothing.
“The judge knows us.”
Silence.
“The police know us.”
Silence.
“Everyone knows us.”
I looked him straight in the eyes.
“But apparently nobody knows you.”
For a moment, Richard looked confused.
Then angry.
“What does that mean?”
I didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Nobody in this town knew who I really was.
They only knew the quiet old man who fixed his own truck.
The man who lived alone.
The man who disappeared from everyone’s life.
But fifteen years ago…
I wasn’t that man.
I carried Lily carefully outside.
People stopped talking.
They watched.
Nobody helped.
Nobody asked questions.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because every person there knew something was wrong.
They just decided it wasn’t their problem.
Richard followed me.
“You’re making a mistake.”
I placed Lily in my truck.
Then turned around.
“No.”
I closed the door.
“You made the mistake.”
He smiled.
“You don’t know what you started.”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
I opened the driver’s door.
“I do.”
Then I drove away.
But Richard was right about one thing.
Something had started.
And he had no idea how far it would go.
---
Three hours later, Lily was safe.
A doctor checked her injuries.
She refused to talk at first.
Then she saw me sitting beside her.
And she finally broke.
“I thought nobody would believe me.”
I held her hand.
“Why?”
“Because everyone loves Richard.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“Dad.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone loves the version of Richard he shows them.”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“He told me nobody would believe me.”
I looked at her.
“He was wrong.”
She squeezed my hand.
“Dad…”
“What?”
“Why do you seem like you already know what to do?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew the truth.
I had spent fifteen years running from the person I used to be.
But now…
That person was coming back.
I went home after midnight.
I walked into my garage.
Behind old boxes and forgotten tools was a locked metal case.
I stared at it.
Fifteen years.
I had never opened it.
Until tonight.
I entered the code.
The case opened.
Inside was a satellite phone.
A secure identification card.
And a small black folder.
I picked up the phone.
My hands were steady.
Because somewhere deep inside…
I knew this day would come.
The phone connected.
A voice answered immediately.
“Authorization required.”
I closed my eyes.
Then said the name I hadn’t spoken in years.
The line went silent.
Then the voice changed.
“Agent Walker?”
I looked at the folder.
The past I buried.
The life I abandoned.
The promise I made.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Why are you calling?”
I looked at the picture of Lily on my desk.
My little girl.
The reason I survived everything.
“Because someone hurt my daughter.”
The voice became serious.
“Do you require assistance?”
I stared into the darkness.
“Yes.”
“What level?”
I took a breath.
Then answered.
“The highest.”
May you like
