Chapter 2 - THE MAID WHO SAW WHAT THEY MISSED

Nobody moved.
Not the paramedics.
Not the guards.
Not even Michael Carter.
The rain outside continued pounding against the glass, but inside the nursery, every sound disappeared.
All eyes were on Emily Parker.
The maid.
The woman who was supposed to stay invisible.
Michael stepped closer.
“You’re telling me twelve trained professionals missed something, and you saw it?”
Emily swallowed.
“Yes.”
A few guards exchanged looks.
Frank Miller immediately stepped between Michael and Emily.
“Sir, maybe we should remove her from the room.”
“No.”
Michael’s voice was low.
Everyone stopped.
He looked at Emily.
“Explain.”
The lead paramedic shook his head.
“Mr. Carter, we don’t have time for guesses.”
Emily looked at him.
“I’m not guessing.”
She pointed at Noah’s blanket.
“That blanket was wrapped around him before you arrived?”
Margaret, the nanny, nodded quickly.
“Yes.”
Emily walked closer.
“And the room temperature?”
Michael looked confused.
“What about it?”
“It’s too warm.”
The paramedic frowned.
“That doesn’t explain airway failure.”
Emily looked at Noah.
“It does if his body is reacting to something.”
The room went silent.
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“What something?”
Emily hesitated.
That hesitation made his heart drop.
“What are you not telling me?”
“I need to check something first.”
“You don’t get to check anything. My son is dying.”
Emily looked directly into his eyes.
“Exactly.”
The answer shocked him.
She wasn’t afraid.
Not of him.
Not of the guards.
Not of the millions of dollars surrounding him.
“Let me help him.”
For a moment, Michael saw something strange.
Not confidence.
Not arrogance.
Recognition.
Like Emily had seen this before.
The lead paramedic stepped forward.
“Ma’am, move away.”
Emily didn’t.
Instead, she reached toward Noah’s blanket.
Every guard in the room reacted.
Frank grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t touch the child.”
Emily looked at him.
“Then watch him die.”
The words hit like a bullet.
Frank released her.
Michael stared.
“Emily…”
Her voice softened.
“Mr. Carter, trust me for ten seconds.”
Ten seconds.
That was all she asked.
Michael looked at his son.
Then at the woman everyone ignored.
“Do it.”
Emily immediately removed the blanket.
The paramedics watched.
Nothing happened.
Then she touched Noah’s neck.
Her eyes widened.
“There.”
“What?”
She pointed.
“Look.”
The lead paramedic leaned closer.
A tiny mark.
Almost invisible.
A small red swelling beneath Noah’s skin.
The medic’s expression changed.
“What is that?”
Emily answered quietly.
“An allergic reaction.”
The room froze.
The medic shook his head.
“No. That doesn’t cause this.”
Emily looked at him.
“Not by itself.”
A pause.
“Unless the baby was exposed to something that triggered massive swelling.”
Michael felt cold.
“Exposed to what?”
Emily didn’t answer.
Because she was looking at the bottle sitting near the crib.
The unfinished bottle.
And everyone suddenly understood.
Someone had fed Noah something.
Something dangerous.
Michael turned slowly.
“Who prepared his bottle?”
May you like
Nobody answered.
That silence was the answer.
