Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

Michael Carter had spent his entire life chasing control.
Control of companies.
Control of markets.
Control of people.
He believed money could solve everything.
Until the night someone took his son.
Now he stood in an empty hospital room staring at the crib where Noah had been.
The machine still beeped.
The blanket was still there.
But his son was gone.
For the first time in his life…
Michael Carter was completely powerless.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
“Where is my son?”
A quiet voice replied.
“Still making demands.”
Michael froze.
Victoria.
“Bring him back.”
She laughed softly.
“You still think you’re in control.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“What do you want?”
A pause.
“The truth.”
“You have it.”
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“You have pieces.”
Michael looked around the room.
“What truth?”
Victoria answered:
“The truth about your father.”
Silence.
“You think he was a hero?”
Michael didn’t respond.
“He wasn’t.”
The words hit him.
“He built Carter Industries on stolen secrets.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“He destroyed people.”
“No.”
“He destroyed my family.”
Michael felt his anger breaking.
“Where is Noah?”
Victoria ignored the question.
“You spent your whole life trying to become your father.”
A pause.
“But you never asked why everyone who loved him ended up dead.”
Michael’s breathing changed.
“What are you saying?”
Victoria whispered:
“Your father wasn’t protecting the family.”
“He was protecting himself.”
Michael looked toward Daniel.
His brother stood silently.
Listening.
Victoria continued:
“And Sarah discovered everything.”
Michael’s hands tightened.
“What happened to Sarah?”
A long pause.
Then Victoria said:
“She wasn’t killed by me.”
Michael froze.
“Then who?”
The phone went silent.
For five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Then Victoria answered:
“Yourself.”
Michael’s heart stopped.
“What?”
“You caused her death.”
“No.”
“You were so obsessed with winning that you ignored every warning she gave you.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“You chose business over your wife.”
His voice cracked.
“Stop.”
“And now you’re about to lose your son the same way.”
The call ended.
Michael stood frozen.
Then Daniel spoke.
“She’s lying.”
Michael turned.
But Daniel’s face was pale.
Because he looked uncertain.
And that scared Michael more than anything.
Emily suddenly rushed into the room.
Her face was wet with tears.
“I found something.”
Michael turned.
“What?”
She held up a small memory card.
“From Sarah’s video.”
“The missing part?”
Emily nodded.
“It wasn’t deleted.”
“Then where was it?”
She looked at Michael.
“Hidden inside Noah’s medical file.”
Michael stared.
“Play it.”
Emily inserted the card.
Sarah appeared again.
Her face was full of fear.
“Michael…”
Her voice trembled.
“If you are seeing this, then our son is in danger.”
Michael stepped closer.
Sarah continued:
“But before you blame anyone else…”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Remember one thing.”
A pause.
“The person who hurt us…”
Michael held his breath.
“…is the person you trusted most.”
The video stopped.
Everyone looked at each other.
Then Michael’s phone received a message.
One sentence.
From Victoria.
Come alone if you want your son alive.
Michael stared at the screen.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I’m coming with you.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“This time…”
He looked toward the door.
“I do this as a father.”
And for the first time in his life…
Michael Carter walked into a battle without money, power, or protection.
Only one thing mattered.
May you like
Finding his son.
