Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

The police arrived within twenty minutes.

But Adeline already knew something.

This was not a random kidnapping.

The person who took Wes knew exactly what they were doing.

They knew where he went to school.

They knew when he left.

They knew how to reach Adeline.

And they knew she would panic.

A detective asked questions.

“When was the last time you saw your brother?”

“Yesterday morning.”

“Any enemies?”

Adeline almost laughed.

“No.”

She looked around the room.

At the expensive furniture.

At the people watching.

“Apparently I do now.”

Nico stayed beside her.

Even though he was still recovering.

Even though he was exhausted.

He stayed.

The detective noticed.

“You’re Mr. Alfieri?”

“Yes.”

“Your nurse is involved with your family’s situation?”

Nico answered immediately.

“She is helping.”

The detective looked at him.

“You’re sure?”

Nico’s voice became cold.

“I’m sure about very few things.”

A pause.

“But I’m sure about her.”

That meant more than Adeline expected.

After the detective left, she looked at him.

“You shouldn’t trust me that much.”

Nico looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because everyone you trusted betrayed you.”

He looked away.

“That’s exactly why I know the difference now.”

Later that night, Adeline received another message.

A location.

No explanation.

Just an address.

Nico saw her face.

“Where?”

“I’m going alone.”

“No.”

“This is about my brother.”

“And it involves my enemies.”

She shook her head.

“Nico.”

He moved his wheelchair forward.

“You protected me when nobody else did.”

His eyes locked onto hers.

“Now I protect you.”

Adeline wanted to argue.

But she knew something.

Nico was not the same man everyone saw.

The wheelchair had changed his body.

Not his courage.

They arrived at the location.

An abandoned warehouse.

Dark.

Silent.

Too quiet.

Adeline stepped inside.

“Wes?”

A small voice answered.

“Adeline?”

She ran forward.

But before she reached him—

The lights turned on.

May you like

And standing behind Wes was the last person she expected.

Camille.
